I think the people responding to you are highlighting exactly why Mamdani's painting of social democracy as socialism is so dangerous. Liberals who have no basis in theory cannot fundamentally understand the broader dialectical view of why social democracy is not the long-term solution.

However at the same time if we remain grounded in the material reality of the United States as being the imperial core of the global Capitalist machine, I can understand why people are so comforted by social democracy.

Social democracy might set the United States back from a genuine socialist transformation by another century, or least until the imperialist superprofits run dry when climate change forces a reckoning. I'm at the point where I'm not sure a genuine socialist revolution can occur in the US until conditions become far far more dire, but even then we didn't see that happening in the 40s because FDR placated the socialist pressure with social democracy.

These are not semantics. The differences are vital for very real reasons, but most people cannot comprehend why because they have no basis in Marxist theory or the history of socialist projects.

Rosa Luxembourg and Lenin are great resources for better understanding why social democracy (what Mamdani is describing here) is not sustainable and fundamentally changes nothing about the underlying power structure at play here.

We are seeing in real time the dismantling of social democracy in Europe as far right groups grow stronger and begin to engage in austerity (cutting social welfare programs, privatizing public institutions, sowing distrust in institutions). The UK's healthcare system is a shell of what it used to be, for example.

There is also the very real history of social democrats siding with fascists over socialists and communists, as seen in Nazi Germany. Claiming that Americans are incapable of comprehending or agreeing with the foundational socialist principle of the worker's owning the means of production is just infantilizing.
