I could write entire books about the advantages of being from a western white country.
However, there are definitely names that aren't supposed to be nice for the dutch. It's just that most don't really stick cause here in the netherlands, we curse with diseases rather than anything else. So if you wanna have a dutch sleur,
Call them "kanker laaglanders" That'll work generally to get a reaction out of dutch people.
Also the word "dutch" itself is in my opinion a reference to the deutsche, so essentially you're calling dutch peoples (low)germans. Entymology of the word dutch is pretty interesting.
Also call all dutch people "hollanders" that can also get a reaction out of some i think (cause holland is a province in the netherlands)

Your topic is very interesting, but i'm wondering when the moderation comes to this post. I'm not used to this many comments on this sub without sources or am i missing something?

Dude (or gurl or whatev), you should stop trying in this thread, for your own sake. I think the ones you're discussing with here either simply don't agree with you or they do agree but just hate russia more than they care about civilian lives.
Also the original comment about chillin on a beach during wartime seems to me to be more of a joke of bad taste than really blaming the civilians for their deaths but i could be mistaken there.

Saw a video about it with clips from inside the country. Shit was aweful... Lots of bodies. Full on automatic shooting on unarmed civilians. Relatives of dead protestors had to pay for every bullet that was found in the body if they wanted the body back to bury. Nurses and doctors were threatened to not help wounded protestors (im unsure if some actually got executed for it, wouldn't be surprised)
There was also a case of some revolutionairy guards using the chaos of those protests to raid a hospital and gangraped a nurse.
One thing is for sure, that regime is horrid and evil

I was just kidding around! Thought that was obvious from my comment haha. Anyways, i am totally on board for calling the eastern roman empire just the roman empire (or maybe medieval roman empire instead).
However, Sometimes making some distinctions can be usefull for talking about stuff. Especially cause the history of the romans stretches multiple millennia.
LokMatrona
It was the late roman empire in the eastern part of what was the total roman empire that existed in the west of the east

He might nuke other european countries tho... Putin did make threats about that

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.
But in the world of the blind, one-eye is king.
It feels like all parties involved are trying to be that one-eye.
Also i believe the islamic republic must face consequences for their inhumane rule and warcrimes. Though an attack on their water resources would not punish the IR, but the people of iran instead.
God i hope trump's just rambling things

I love this subreddit and such a good and thorough and yet to the point answer to this question. Thank you!

Some people just can't have normal differening opinions it seems. I mean, there are quite some redditors out there who are indeed just shitting on the show cause they like to hate it. But i didn't feel that was the case with your opinion at all. You were just sharing what you missed in the show and i appreciate that. Sorry my comment became a bandwagon for someone to call you a mouthbreather and hater, you're not <3

I agree. Also want to add that i'm slightly annoyed with the statement "yet 80% genetically identical to humans". This gives the impression that the genome of these worms and the genome of humans are 80% identical. But as i understand it, the truth is that 80% of the genome of the worms is identical to that of humans and not the otherway around.
Now if we take the biggest worm genome known to us, which holds 1.3 billion bp, and take 80% of that, we'll have about 1 billion bp that are identical to the human genome. The human genome consists of roughly 3 billion bp. Thus these worms are actually at most 33% genetically identical to humans.
Maybe i'm wrong though and they used a worm with 2.5 billion bp, but the article doesn't state the actual size of the worms genome. Also, maybe i'm the only one who read it like that and im making a fuss about nothing so please correct me if i'm wrong. It's just a little pet peeve of mine

Rome's like an enormous open air museum with vast distances between each showroom. And between those showrooms, there is a whole bunch of relatively average modern italian city. However, the city does contain a lot of those showrooms, and those showrooms do go HARD with gigantic and history rich monuments and ruins and tourguide ladies who weirdly praise Mussolini without saying it out loud.
Ofcourse this was just my experience as a tourist and I walked throughout most of it. For me, it was a very impressive city and I absolutely loved it. But if you just hop from attraction to attraction, a lot of time has to be spent on traversal because the sights are so spread out. And if you want to do something else than looking at a bunch of big old things, i can imagine that the city might not seem to offer much.

Either people don't see the obvious sarcasm or maybe its considered trolling/not serious enough for a sub focused on history. This sub is not as strict as r/askhistorians but i can imagine people don't come here for the jokes. Even if admittedly a bit funny, especially the comments after that

Good and thorough answer. However, it did leave me wondering how much of an influence trauma would have on the behaviour of these raping soldiers in these circumstances or is it mostly dehumanized enemies and revenge? Might some soldiers who perform the horrific acts themselves be completely dissassosiated in those moments?
LokMatrona
If we go like that we could say the same for so many more country and city names. Take florance for example. firenze sounds way cooler and more italian
Also, i learned a few months back that Osterreich originally was named östermark. Mark meaning border/border realm as it was the eastern border of the holy roman empire.
Likewise i've been told Ukraine means western realm.

Even if they weren't hot people, when people get together they just do.
Old friend of mine was part of an orchestra as a teen and young adult. The stories he had about basically orgies outside of the performances were eye opening.
Also, my girlfriend went to a science congress in madrid. Im not sure what the focus was but she herself is in ecological research. She said that when going out, she saw some of the most prominent researchers basically slutting around on the dancefloor.

My best friend is an introverted, super social person. Exactly like you said, prefers to unwind by herself, in fact needs regular time for herself. But still loves to go out and about and meet people. She is far from shy (except with some random things) and has a tight and caring inner social circle, but is also at ease with meeting lots of new people, it just takes a bit more effort for strangers to get her to open up. Sounds almost contradicting, but she really do be like that.
Meanwhile i am an extravert who does know when to shut up and i also like and need my time alone.
Honestly, i think the terms extra- and intro-verted are just that. Terms. It's a spectrum and everyone is somewhere on it. I think only a minority of people specifically fall within soley "extra" or soley "intro". And let's not forget people change with age and experience

Living proof that it is possible to be ambitious/successful while being regularly high!
(Not that you need to be that successful or ambitiious to prove that smoking weed regularly doesn't need to dictate our motivation)

When I say nobody hates the Ayatollahs more than Iranian person, I really mean nobody comes close.
I second that! The islamic republic are horrible, power hungry assholes who are more than willing to bomb and kill their persian citizens as they've done multiple times before.
A persian friend of mine who basically ran away from that country is convinced that if iran has a nuke, first thing they'll bomb is their own capital to kick-start the apocalypse so that their proclaimed savior would climb out of a well to turn the whole world muslim. Most persians i've met have stated that they would rather see the US invade or even whipe iran off the map, just to get rid of the islamic extremism that has taken hold there.
Iran has amazing people, beautiful country, and one of the oldest and deepest histories and it saddens me to see basically any iranian i meet with the 1000 yard stare in their eyes

Hahaha i can tell you as a dutch guy myself that indeed people just use whatever they're used to and stick with that, nomatter what they eat.
I have a friend who eats fries and chips with chopsticks, the most common combi is form and knife tho, like indeed for pasta. i personally always use spoon and fork unless i have to cut something ofcourse.
But those people who cut their spaghetti and then switch over to spoon eating...they are diabolical
LokMatrona
I agree with you! You're not the only one.
However i'd like to point some things put that could make you feel a bit less bad about it all. I'm not saying these things to defend zoo's by the way. I'd prefer sanctuaries or just let these animals be in the wild, but not nearly every zoo is as bad as they seem.
First, most animals that you can see in zoos today are born and bred in captivity. They never knew otherwise. In a lot of countries today it is forbidden to take animals from the wild and place m in zoos.
Second, if animals are taken from the wild and placed in zoos, most of the times these were animals that were really badly injured and/or abandoned by their parents/fam/group and had no chance of survival back in the wild.
Third, there are zoos that act more like sancturaries. They are far bigger and try to immitate the natural habitat of the animals.
4: lots of zoos and zookeepers deeply care for their animals and try their best to make sure the animals are entertained, well kept, and happy
5: lots of educational and conservation efforts come from zoos. They spend money they earn from visitors either on breeding programs to try to safe certain animals from extinction. For instance the white rhinos and pandas would have died out if not for the breeding efforts of zoos across the world. They also try to put some of these animals back in the wild if they are viable for that. Some zoos have these spaces where animals reside that is not open to the public, specifically so that the animals don't get used to humans and can go back into the wild. There they are trained to hunt and/or trained to socialize with their own species.
Lastly i'd also like to point to a story about chimpanzees in a zoo in the netherlands. They are rescued chimps that were once experimented on back when animal rights was not a thing. These chimps are deeply traumatized and would not last in the wild, so instead they were given a very spacious place with lots for them to do, like playing games, interacting with humans through games (shirt-term memory games where chimps excel at by the way so humans often loose) and they seem happy over there.
One final disclaimer: these points that i made ofcourse vary from country to country and from zoo to zoo. I do like going to a zoo to see and learn about some of the animals, but i always make sure i research if the zoo i wanna visit is actually one that respects animal rights and put a lot of effort in conservation and don't take animals from the wild and do give them lots of space and things to do. I'm ashamed of how we humans treated animals in the past, but slowly it seems a lot of places are making up for that and trying their best to ensure an ethical, safe, fun place for the animals to live.
I know it doesn't make everything right, but i do believe that there are zoos/sanctuaries that are trying their best to be good for the animals and give back to the world

Isn't that just very case specific? Some events happen just once and then its done and we can delve into it. Other events take years (covid for instance) so there's "more" info to gather over a longer period of time. Also some information from certain events are witheld from the public. For instance there are a bunch of documents from ww2 that are still classified and will become available in 2045. And then there's destroyed information and people who want to destroy information from the past. Meaning that in some cases, we can learn less from certain events after a certain time has passed if we don't research it immideatly. And then there are some cases where new technologies allow for further understanding of a certain event
I applaud your writing, a nice combination of scientific inquiry and reddit vernacular
