There’s not much special about this. Almost all R&D advances based on prior research (prior art in patent terms).

The better answer is probably not to tie our entire agricultural output to a very small range of specific cultivars (licensed or not). We should have more diversity in our crops anyway.

The problem, of course, is that trying to efficiently feed 7 billion people requires ultra high yields, so only the most optimized cultivars are sought by agribusiness.

But get down to local organic/sustainable/regenerative farming, and the IP stuff is not a big deal, because those guys aren’t trying to generate max yields. They’re trying to generate quality. And quality isn’t coming from new patented strains.

Our daughter is off at college, so this will be our first Halloween without her around for 18 years! But my neighborhood goes absolutely nuts for Halloween… hundreds and hundreds of people will pass by my house. My wife and I and the dogs will hang out in the front yard, drink a nice beverage or two, hand out candy, and see a lot of our neighbors as they come by. It will be a fun evening.

Madeitup75

Airbrush everything you can. Hand brush only what you cannot spray.

Madeitup75

FWIW, I absolutely think guys running through neighborhoods shirtless and with booty shorts are jackasses. I judge the f*** out of them.

Madeitup75

I live in the city and have for decades.

Madeitup75

Ooh, great tips. Researching/planning for a potential trip myself and your notes are helpful! Thanks for sharing.

I’m surprised it was ever on there. It’s fun and interesting. My family and I go 2-3 times per year. Every time we go, some things are great, most are interesting, and something is revolting. Michelin’s assessments have historically focused on consistency of execution judged over multiple visits. Gunshow is just not set up to do well under that rubric.

“Plenty” is a small fraction, at least in my neighborhood. Having one renter in an SFD on a street/block with 20 houses is going to have a VERY different impact on feel and behavior than putting a dozen renters in 1 or 2BR units on that same block. You’re just going to get a lot of folks who are in an earlier stage of life and who have a different idea of what behavior is OK. You’re going to have a lot more non-resident visitors coming and going. There will be more cars on the street.

It’s just a change the existing residents don’t want, and it’s entirely reasonable and fair for those who have centered their lives in a neighborhood to insist the rules stay consistent.

And forgive my skepticism but I do not believe that the quality of the development would be good. In this economy? No chance.

Madeitup75

And each of the neighborhoods in Atlanta should continue to have most of the control about what changes to make or not make in their own neighborhood.

Madeitup75

I used to live in such a neighborhood south of Piedmont park, so I’m pretty familiar with the experience those sorts of neighborhoods give. They can be nice, but there are tradeoffs that come with living in close proximity to renters. There will be more conflicts between neighbors, more late night noise, less shared interest in maintaining common spaces, etc. For people who crave “energy,” this can be a good trade. For people who place a higher priority on stability of community - knowing their neighbors for years and years - and a shared set of behavioral norms, it’s not a good trade. See top level comment. This trade should not be forced on communities that don’t want it.

But to clarify, the enshitification that would happen today is because of the PE-driven development model. Even if “gentle density” is inflicted on SFD’s, it won’t take the form of the beautiful brick architecture that is scattered around VaHi and piedmont park and even Ansley. It will be OSB and cinderblock cheap construction similar to the apartments at Lindbergh but smaller. And it will be run by the very unpleasant modern MFH industry. It will be shitty.

Madeitup75

And there are large swaths of Atlanta where this sort of density would be welcomed and can be supported. But the developers (and their useful-idiot urbanist reddit tools) want to cram it into mature existing “nicer” SFD’s where the residents are against it. Because those are the places where the developers could make the most money by inflicting a new 12-unit apartment on the neighbors, because the rent will be higher than if they put the same building south of I-20.

Atlanta has a great deal of land that is either already zoned for this or where the locals would welcome it. But it’s just standard developer greed and the PE multifamily industry at work. They seek to enshitify our neighborhoods.

Madeitup75

A lot of SFD neighborhood zoning does allow one accessory dwelling unit.

But did you buy your house and lot with zoning rules in place that you’re now complaining about?

Madeitup75

It was. It still is. But it also was back then.

Madeitup75

Can’t let all the atomics only be held by a few great houses.

Madeitup75

Yep, all my neighbors and I will keep fighting to keep our neighborhood as it is. Because we don’t want “loud and obnoxious noises all day.”

Grow up. Pick a place you like AS-IS.

Madeitup75

Yep, you found him. You’re it.

Don’t know if you noticed, but Russia has been invading anyone that cannot fight them off for centuries. They’re trying it again right now.

With no military, the U.S. would be conquered in no time at all.

This is why virtually every country in the world in history spends money to have a military. And the more the country has, the more it spends. Unless it is able to convince others to do the spending for them.

Madeitup75

I go to Chicago and think “thank the Lord I don’t live here.” Fun to visit, no way would I live there.

If you like it better than Atlanta - MOVE.

Madeitup75

Maybe. I bought it a couple of years ago, maybe I paid less.

But some Bordeaux is CHEAP right now. Seems like about a third of the producers have twigged that they need to buy some market share with discounting to get relevant with non-boomer consumers.

Like Warren Buffet said…. Grab a bucket, not a thimble.

Madeitup75

Agreed. Fuck them “urbanists.”

Madeitup75

Fair question.

Also: Why do people act confused when residents of single family neighborhoods resist urbanist calls to make their quiet streets more dense like midtown?

Some people like living in vertical, busy, noisy neighborhoods. Some people don’t. People should pick neighborhoods that suit them as they are, not cry when the world doesn’t change to suit them.

Madeitup75

Nope. A stereotypically monolingual American. Wish I had acquired a second language. Tried French, German, and Spanish as a kid, but my heart wasn’t in it. Should have tried a little harder!

Speaking of not being proud…

Madeitup75

My next door neighbors for the last 15 years are Venezuelans. I have happily appropriated a couple of items from their culture! I wish my daughter had absorbed some Spanish fluency from hanging out with them. We sometimes trade gifts of holiday cooking.

I’m proud of my cornbread dressing because it is good! And so are their hallacas.

Fortunately, neither of us has our egos tied up in our cultures so we can just enjoy the good parts of each.

Madeitup75
Madeitup75

All of it, or just the parts you think are good? Any items/practices/foods/music/literature from other cultures that you have taught your children about? If your child chose to depart from one of the cultural practices you observe, would you feel shame?

Madeitup75

Ok, so you don’t have pride in a culture, you feel some other emotion or appraisal about it. That’s fine.
