How did you drill down to this? I’ve selected “birth, marriage & death (parish registers)”. Is that correct? I don’t see where I can get into NY Roman Catholic Parishes. (I’m on web site; idk if there is an app that may be different?)
MaidoftheBrins
Thank you! I’ve learned so much today!
MaidoftheBrins
It sure is!! Again, thank you so much. You found this also through Find My Past? I will also request this one. This has been a big break-through for me! I am going to do the trial as my Dad’s other side is from NY and Ireland; maybe I can finally make some headway there!
MaidoftheBrins
I was considering the trial but saw it was UK/Irish. My g-grandmother (Karolina’s sister Helena) was German as was her husband. I’m going to see if there is a comparable German website like this one. In all likelihood, Helena was also married in the Catholic Church. I need to hit my library where they have access to Ancestry and other databases; I’ve hit brick walls on both sides of my Dad’s family. Again, the names are so “all over the place” that it will require a lot of different searches. Thank you again!
MaidoftheBrins
Oh my goodness - THANK YOU! It was so nice of you to look this up for me. I wasn’t able to find anything about their marriage. I noticed it says “Schrader”, another issue. It’s written as “Schroeder”, “Schroder”, “Schrader”, and her first name “Karolina”, “Caroline”, “Carrie”! It’s no wonder things are so tough to find. “Josephus” - that is a new one! I appreciate you very much! And thank you for the source, also.
ETA: looking at the timeline, she got married, had 11 children (at least) and then died. So sad.

Thank you!

Thanks for this tip!

I don’t think there was a lot of “paying attention to detail” back then. I know there was someone in my ancestry where has born in the US was everywhere except one census.
The stumbling blocks don’t help: the fire that took out most of the 1890 census; that was crucial for a lot of my ancestors. The mis-indexed records for NYC. The fact that NYC is not all digitized. The misspellings. I feel like Sherlock Holmes most days!
MaidoftheBrins
Would that I could! I’ve looked up how to contact them and they say that mechanism is “coming soon”. In the meantime, I am compiling a list.

Love these stories! Where did you locate all this information?
MaidoftheBrins
Here’s another example: I’m looking up John Wesp (I see on FamilySearch that the name also appears as “Wesp”, so trying different searches. 1892-07-22 B-M-2002 is indexed to a John Wesp, but the actual cert is for “Fannie Whiener”.
So I just searched by cert number and two come up; both are for “Fannie”, but one is indexed as “John Wesp”.

Junior was 40 when his Dad passed, but it’s quite possible he didn’t know his grandparents. I would think the answer would be “Unknown” then. I’m chalking it up to grief and misunderstanding.
MaidoftheBrins
I wonder how it was presented to them. Did they fill out a form, were they asked “name of father” or “name of decedent’s father”? 1924, who knows! They sure couldn’t write legibly!!!
MaidoftheBrins
I will now have to review my parents’ certs!
MaidoftheBrins
Sorry, yes, I was referring to the NYC Vital Records Search. I didn’t notice that yesterday but I was not looking up by cert number. Something else I will need to be aware of going forward; thank you.

He was fairly young when bio mom died. I don’t doubt he considered Margaretha his mom.
MaidoftheBrins
Question: have you found any instances where you bring up a record but the cert doesn’t match the index? I’ve had that at least three times, and they would have been really helpful if they were correct. I’ve looked into how to report and they say “it’s coming soon”. I can’t imagine how difficult this digitizing must be.
MaidoftheBrins
Thanks for links; I didn’t have Margaret’s Death cert. I agree, he must have just not been thinking clearly. These responses help; I was going around in circles for a while.

And “single” over “widowed” but it’s his second marriage. Thanks for this; I had the date but I also like to download the certs to add to the person (Family Tree Maker). I’m thinking he didn’t know his mother’s “maiden name”; (hopefully he knew her first name and just didn’t add it.)

TAlmadge was ours!

I have similar. Diagnosed as a Carpal Boss.

That looks a lot like the staircase to my derm. They finally installed an elevator so I was able to get my elderly Mom up.

His self-loathing killed him.
Thank you!
