Cheap Fish - Commander (Eluge, the Shoreless Sea) (moxfield.com) [Deck Help]

MathDoneInPen
Just lost to this guy a week ago! Someone at the LGS was running Szat with [[Rograhk]], and lots of colorless ramp. Basically saccing the goblin to Szat's +1 to rip through his deck and storm off with [[Skull Storm]] as the wincon. He got that little goober up to like 14c with tax
MathDoneInPen
Fell stinger Apprentice Necromancer are solid recs! I've already got flesh bag in here now.
Ayara as the commander is probably more optimal given its draw and combo in the command zone. I got sick of my own commander dying to Noxious Ghoul so that's why I'm opting for a zombie in the zone lol.
MathDoneInPen
Archghoul and Vizier look like fun adds to pickup. I actually have a copy of Nightmare, seems like a no brainer to drop it in!
MathDoneInPen
Sure, here is my latest tweak to the list. I'd recommend a cheaper Big Anthem than the Coat of Arms I've got in here, just happen to have one when I put the list together.

It basically does 3 things: Ramp, Draw, and Trigger Rendmaw.
PS: Rendmaw is a Play trigger so you can also trigger it with Artifact/Enchantment/Creature lands!
MathDoneInPen
So curio triggers on non-artifact permanents, which includes Rendmaw's Bird tokens! Since they are creatures, you can bounce another Creature.
So I use [[Scrapyard Recombiner]] to tutor for two 0-cost constructs like [[Memnite]] and [[Ornithopter]].
The 0 cost doesn't trigger curio, but the Bird you get for it does! Play the first, get a bird, ignore the first curio trigger. Then play the second 0-cost, which gets you another bird and a curio trigger that lets you bounce the first 0 and repeat. It's basically a Golgari [[Hullbreaker Horror]] loop.
MathDoneInPen
You mentioned Golgari in a comment, I humbly submit [[Rendmaw, Creaking Nest]].
Plays a bunch of cheap multi type jank and can scale well with a budget. My current lines include infinite birds with [[Cloudstone Curio]], or group slug with pingers like [[Blood Seeker]] and the new Gideon
MathDoneInPen
Second this; Winota is crazy strong on a budget but I'd argue it's kind of hard to make as low as a B3 unless you do something like werewolves.
MathDoneInPen
If he taps them as artifacts before making one a creature then no haste enabler needed.
MathDoneInPen
If you're cool with local shops down towards Pelham has Card Addicts with FNM. It's a lot of table space there so it can get a bit loud and out.
Gear Gaming in Hoover does a dedicated Commander Night on Wednesday and more formats on Friday. Smaller than Card Addicts and very chill, great mix of people there too!
I've also heard Iron City Games is chill but I've never played there.
MathDoneInPen
I like to make decks around a $50-100 budget range. I'm playing around with Eluge, The Shoreless Sea and hoping I hit a sweet spot for B3 with plenty of interaction
MathDoneInPen
I run [[Rendmaw]] with a goad subtheme. [[Bloodthirsy Blade]] with [[Artificer's Hex]] puts in crazy work, as well as [[Ghoulish Impetus]] and [[Eye of Nidhog]]. My artifact recursion options also let me loop [[Ransom Note]].
MathDoneInPen
I'm in the same boat re: brackets. Just started back playing this year and as far as I've been able to get it, the real differences between 2 & 3 are
1) game changers, obviously
2) Card quality - best in slot cards can push you up a bracket
3) Speed - the faster your deck wins (or establishes a dominant board state) the higher the bracket
But it's a discussion tool, guidelines, not hard and fast rules, so there are edge cases; Voltron decks are faster but that doesn't automatically make them higher bracket. Control/Grindy decks are slower but that doesn't make them lower bracket.
Pickle Lock (Brine Elemental + Vesuvan Shapeshifter) isn't a win itself but it is a strong asymmetric untap lock that can be established turn 6, and I would call that a dominant board state, so probably a B3 tech not B2
At least, that's what I've worked out so far, by no means a subject matter expert here.
MathDoneInPen
Eluge, the Shoreless Sea - Voltron, with a Token pump and big fish beaters backup plan. Aiming for B3.
Rendmaw, Creaking Nest - Group Slug. Ramp like crazy and tutor for either Massacre Wurm or Curio for infinite birds. Also goal at B3.
MathDoneInPen
Tella with Cantrips + [[Hawkeye, Trick Shot]] on the board is a dang machine gun!
MathDoneInPen
Big fan of Rendmaw especially if your local meta is very Solitaire adjacent - forced the pods to actually play around combat while they rush to assemble their engines. Toss in a [[Bad Moon]] and a [[Blood Seeker]] for good measure!
Absolutely FOLDS to aristocrats tho
MathDoneInPen
The normal Eluge wincon will involve looping extra turns, but that's not normally very budget friendly. You've got a few nice copy/token synergies so you probably want some ways to add evasion to your big fish and maybe some kind of anthem or pump for your tokens.
[[Octavia, Living Thesis]] is great pump for your tokens that syncs with your game plan. You can swing wide and then cast after blockers are declared to pump your unblocked chumps.
Cards like [[Fishliver oil]] and [[Rogue's Passage]] that make Eluge unblockable work great with [[Runechanter's Pike]] to make your commander damage big and sticky
[[Archetype of Imagination]] in combination with Stormtide is an effective game wide combat lock... for 15ish mana 😬
As an aside, you might also want [[Aven Courier]] and [[Aquatect's Will]] to help accelerate flood counters.
MathDoneInPen
Sure! It's kind of a wild ride deck, if you can get a copy of [[Tainted Strike]] it would probably work better as an additional source of infection for the Combo out
MathDoneInPen
The blue rituals look like great ideas! I was similarly looking at [[Frantic Search]] and [[Turnabout]]
MathDoneInPen
In the same colors you can run [[Rendmaw]] in a robot/myr tribal shell and do funny bird and robot shenanigans.
MathDoneInPen
Cloudstone loop works bc the bird entering triggers it, see above reply
MathDoneInPen
Cloudstone allows for plenty of infinites bc you get a trigger off the bird entering! If you have two 0 cost artifact creatures, like [[memnite]] and [[ornithopter]], (or reduced cost to 0 like the above suggested) loop works out like this: 1. Play a 0-cost Artifact Creature (AC) 2. Bird trigger 3. Bird trigger resolves first, and now a non-artifact permanent enters under your control 4. Curio trigger, allowing you to bounce an exiting permanent of the same type (a creature, namely an artifact creature) 5. Let the bounce trigger and your original AC cast resolve, now you have a second AC in hand to do the loop again.
If both AC are 0 cost, the loop is infinite
[[Zul Ashur]] will let you recur [[Accursed Marauder]], [[Fleshbag Marauder]], and [[Ravenous Rotbelly]]
