Empire's End. A game about trying to survive through the collapse of your civilization and rebuilding society during endless disasters.

The gameplay is a more convoluted version of No, thanks.

Morfolk

It seems to me that Ukraine could have surrendered and preserved people's lives

Laughably wrong. Even if you ignore all the history between Ukraine and russia.

Instead let's look at something far more recent: Chechnya. That's an example of a country that surrendered. Did that preserve people's lives? For a very short time because now Chechens are disproportionately sent to fight on different front lines.

That's the choice: risk your life protecting your home, risk you life during the post-war repressions or risk your life fighting your oppressor's wars.

2021 was a bit weird because of post-COVID. I would say 2018 or 2019 were better, same trends but not marred by an epidemic.

2007 was indeed a bubble both in real estate and foreign investments. Great if you were close to the dollar pipeline, not that good for the rest with rent prices exploding.

I would probably go with 2018: in addition to growing economy and working reforms, we also had Anti-Corruption Court established and tomos received.

Morfolk

https://texty.org.ua/fragments/101830/na-oboronu-ne-vydano-zhodnoyi-derzhharantiyi-raketni-prohramy-ne-finansuyutsya-zatyahuyetsya-pidpysannya-kontraktiv-zabrodskyj/

Morfolk

Morfolk

Morfolk

Morfolk

Morfolk

Morfolk

In that case I am thoroughly confused.

do you think the average player is running security scans on their mods? Or indeed, that vibe coding games developers are doing so? ... it's that the barrier to entry is so incredibly low that if it does write shit code, the 'developer' might not even notice, because they don't know what good code looks like.

Do you think this was not the case before for the majority of low-effort mods, etc? Previously the authors would have copy-pasted it from who knows where. In fact AI may increase code quality for this kind of development.

Again, my main argument is that "the person who made it has no idea how it runs" has been the case for a very long time already for this type of thing. Now they have better tools.

Morfolk

They broadly do not need to, because the sort of open sourced libraries in common usage benefit from the security of transparency...while not immune to exploits, have them only rarely.

I'm sorry but you make it painfully clear that you are not involved in software development at serious scale.

There's nothing 'rarely' about exploits and vulnerabilities present in community libraries and code snippets. There are literally dozens of tools to scan that code before it gets built and deployed.

This is like saying that Waymo cars need seatbelts because people inside don't know what the robot is doing while any human-driven car doesn't need seatbelts because the human drivers know what they are doing.

There's probably no statistical difference in code's danger level per line between human and AI-written versions. The biggest difference is how much more AI can generate. The author in both cases primarily knows their own intent, not how safe that code is. That's why those scanning tools collect billions in revenue each year.

Morfolk

Maybe. Do you think programmers know the answer for every function and library they use? Do you think vulnerability code scanning tools are useless?

Morfolk

Call me a luddite but I don't want to run code on my machine that the person who made it has no idea how it runs.

A bit too late for that.

Do you think python developers know how math.sqrt() works under the hood? Absolute majority doesn't, all they know is that they want to get a square root of some number, but in fact "anything could be in that fucking code".

AI tools provide even more abstraction layers. The question is in the guardrails.

Morfolk

Is there another good ending point in the series?

In my opinion:

  1. The best stopping point is just Dune. Things are both epic and self-contained. We finish the story just as the protagonist prepares to plunge the whole Galaxy into a war.

  2. The second best stopping point is God Emperor. Things get weird but the journey of Paul and his children is truly finished as the Galaxy was reforged into their "Golden Path". No cliffhangers.

  3. The third is the last Frank's book: Chapterhouse: Dune. Things got very weird and there are tons of unfinished plot points and cliffhangers but since Brian Herbert has never read them so - they never got resolved in his lame fanfiction anyway.

Morfolk

Not a single smart one, no.

Morfolk

You would love all the social deduction games that serve as an inspiration for it.

Morfolk

Endeavor Deep Sea has competitive, coop and solo. Great at all three (which is extremely rare)

Morfolk

Animal face recognition, babies have been shown to recognize different monkeys which look absolutely identical to adults.

Morfolk

I'm not sure what you propose to do when a drone or rocket are flying your way?

Do you think you can object your way out if that?

Morfolk

Yeah, most people miss the point. The amount of diesel is negligible. It's about the fact that Trump is aligning himself with Putin, agreeing on new trade framework while USA government can put pressure and even sanctions on Ukraine and their allies for 'attacking American interests'

Morfolk

he was a kid named Rosebud

Why would his parents do this when the name finger was right there?

Morfolk

Well, it's pretty hard to analyze hypothetical situations.

But during the elections Poroshenko was pushing hard on strengthening the army and preparing for war with russia while Zelenskyi was promising to reduce tension and talk it out with Putin.

So I am not sure if Putin would invade or not but I am 300% certain Ukraine would be far more prepared for it with Poroshenko.

Morfolk

The expression "my reptilian brain" becomes even more true.

Morfolk

No, Ukrainian army, volunteers and people fend off russia.

Zelenskyi's job was to 1) prepare the country for an invasion when intelligence officers were almost screaming about it and 2) ensure the country (not Zelenskyi himself) has ongoing support.

He completely failed at task number 1 and has middling results at number 2 like fiasco with the US diplomacy. And before you blame Trump for everything (which is easy) both Federov and previous Ukrainian President were able to deal with Trump and his team without scandals or corruption allegations so it is possible. That's why it's called diplomacy and not "getting everything I want" like Zelenskyi treats it.

Add to that an absolutely horrible situation in domestic policy and I am surprised there are still about 40% of Ukrainians who want him to run again.

Morfolk

If I understood the loop - you simply send fewer and fewer people each round trying to form a team without moles? Good start. Looks like a bit clunky version of Quest or Resistance, I think they implement this idea better.
