honestly, i never liked the old voice, but the new one doesn't feel quite right either. Something that sounds more like a modern voice assistant (adult, but slightly off in cadence and intonation) would have probably felt better to me.

I played the hell out of the original SF64 when it came out. I have been playing the hell out of this, and I genuinely love it.... The improved characterizations of everyone who isn't a one scene wonder really helps make it feel more fleshed out, and helps with a lot of what felt completely out of nowhere in the original.

My only complaint is that some of the one scene wonder villains have less hammy voice acting than before, and I miss the especially slimy sounding voice acting for Leon from the original... but overall, it gets the right balance of hamminess. I can't remember who called something "clutch", but it felt totally like someones parents trying to use modern slang, and it was another "so bad it's good" moment.

literally what i did here, except i used GITD tape. This is already what a lot of others do for lume mods, more or less. You lose a bit of daytime visibility, but not TOO much.

Be mindful of how well your GITD paint will actually work. You really want something that will keep that glow for a while for it to be useful at all - and keep in mind that many GITD materials really do their best with UV, which will be blocked by the "glass." So manage your expectations.

I've done this run, and while I'm glad I did it, I never want to do it again.

If you are a crazy person like I was, you can actually ascend out of the depths with balloons and hover stones - You take a balloon powered by fire (so you don't use battery, you need that in a bit) upwards, perfectly centered over the hole leading to the depths. When it fades out, shoot a hover stone beneath you and land on it, then set another hoverstone, set a balloon on the new hoverstone, carefully set wood on that, set it on fire, then repeat. It's... tedious.

Obviously better to ascend - but if you just don't feel like going to an ascend point, there are other options.

Just some glow tape behind the LCD - got curious after seeing what many did here.

I’m not going to say it’s a very long lasting lume, but doesn’t seem too bad for a first try.

Lindhardt/Ferdinand C support is a rare amazing C support, but in particular:

Linhardt: You've mastered all the important noble skills. You drink tea, talk about how great you are, ride horses...

Ferdinand: Indeed! I went for a ride earlier today.

Linhardt: Is that so? You'll have to tell me about it sometime when I'm not walking away...

MysticMCJ

OH MY GOD thank you. I’ve been living with this curse for too long.

Ever since I first saw it like this, I've never been able to unsee it. This has haunted me forever..... I think maybe I just need to know that somebody else has seen this. The thought of being the only person on the entirety of Reddit who has been seeing it this way is not a pleasant one.

Good point - It's still a nightmare face, just not quite the same one - here's an interpretation of what I see... I've never been able to see it "correctly"

I promise you I see the same nightmare face on the GBA - at least on the SP. I've been seeing this face for over 20 years. I figure I can't be alone in seeing it this way...

I got 100% items just to experience everything in the game, and make sure that my critique was coming from a genuine place. I also went through and replayed several games in the series to confirm what I was thinking, then tried to pick up Prime 4 again, and man, I just can't get into it.

All the obvious criticisms like the empty desert are definitely things that shouldn't be overlooked, but they are far from the only things to criticize.... If you look at what's left if you stripped away all of these things, the answer is that there's not actually a lot of game here. There's a lot of tasks to complete in series, but rarely does it feel fun or interesting or challenging.

But my single largest criticism is just how much time you waste, usually doing nothing. Either waiting for things, trying to find the magic spot to scan, the "follow this line" psychic unlocking - hell, even the scans themselves taking longer. The bullet sponge enemies with simple patterns, where you hardly even need to move. And when the game isn't actively wasting time, what you have to do usually isn't that challenging or interesting.

I find it especially fascinating that people turn to Ice Belt as one of the better areas in the game, because it really exemplifies both of those things. Most of your time is spent walking through empty space, followed by a boss battle that's the wasp hive from prime 1 except much longer and with no gimmick, then walking through empty spaces looking for the right thing to scan so that you can "solve a puzzle" (rotate a thing 180 degrees or so) to get one of a few codes used for a key that is then unlocked by making a ball follow a line, psychically.

The thing is, I don't think anyone is actually wrong saying that it's one of the more interesting areas, there's actually more to do there than most of the game - but it's still tedious.

So along with the time wasting is the emptiness. To be clear, there's isolation, and then there's emptiness - those are two very different things. Prior games have (usually) had a sense of isolation, but it was rare that I could call them empty. Even the smallest tunnels in prime 1 usually had something interesting in them (every environment was so rich), but here, there are so many rooms here where it's just crates and other utilitarian things in there, with very little of interest... and when everything is a fairly sterile facility that's connected by a sterile desert, it just makes it hard to be interested in it.

It didn't have to be empty. None of these things had to be this way - there's just so much here that doesn't even feel half-assed, it feels maybe quarter-assed at most... like, minimum viable product as a game - and frankly, the series deserves better than that. You see so many glimmers of where it could really be something great - there are genuinely moments that the art direction shines and the gameplay clicks, but there's so much emptiness surrounding those moments, and that's unfortunately what dominates most of the game.

i just finished this game, and jesus.

my most charitable take is that this whole thing has been somewhere between a trolling shitpost of a game and a dadaist work of deconstructive art, exposing the futility of choice and the shallow mechanisms that can underly some of the more generic FPS, Metroidvania, and open world games, and this ending was absolutely in the spirit of something like that, intended to leave the player feeling empty.

if that was actually an intentional thing, this would have been kind of amazing, but as far as I can tell, this was actually a sincere effort. And that's just baffling to me.

MysticMCJ

I drive by it on a regular basis as I live out near PT these days - they literally have Trump booths/tents set up outside the building some days.

MysticMCJ

Yeah, I looked at that and thought "hell no" and did the same thing - as far as I'm concerned, that's the intended solution

MysticMCJ

Please tell me you didn't give a dagger to any of your classmates.

Congratulations on graduating, great work with the cap!

Hey, I appreciate this. I've always waxed poetic about the solitary nature of BotW being one of the reasons that I absolutely love it - and I've had a hard time articulating more beyond that. You put it much better than I've been able to .

There's something about that specific feeling of finding beauty in the world on your own - no guidance, not as part of any quest, but just stumbling into something wonderful, on your own, that no other game has been able to capture for me.

MysticMCJ

Every single run I've done, Marianne has somehow ended up being a crit machine, and at this point I've decided that she's a reluctant and possibly accidental offensive mage who can just barely control her magic - taken in context with her crest, and her constant crit quotes of "I'm sorry!" and "Stay away from me!" with the rare "MY BLOOD COMPELS ME" as she proceeds to obliterate things - She's kind of terrifying.

They had some noise issues there for a while. Some of that was addressed with manufacturing, and some of it was addressed with firmware, so it's not so much of an issue anymore - it can be an issue with a used module, so if you are interested in a used one, check to see if there are firmware updates, and look through the notes to see if noise was addressed.

My personal take on this: While there were a handful of real issues, a lot of what people complained about was measurable and noticeable in isolation, but often disappeared in a mix.

MysticMCJ

Sure, it's TotK... just take out the verticality, the build mechanic, the Zonai devices, the weapons system, the master sword, the shrines, the underground, the sky world, and the Rito; add in the echo mechanic, the bond mechanic, more linear dungeons, pieces of heart, the crystals, and the Deku scrubs; and change the entire map around and have an entirely different equipment system. Pretty much the same game!

MysticMCJ

You never used the ghost? You totally missed out on the joy of being able to send the ghost through a wall to activate a switch, bypassing whatever the area actually wants you to do.
