I have an air cooler for my build and it runs fine. The downside is that the heatsink is very bulky, blocks most of my mobo, makes it hard to see/replace the ram, makes it hard to replace fans, and is veeeeery close to my GPU on my microatx motherboard.

On the other hand, it hides the fact that my RAM has no RGB, has no liquid that could potentially destroy my pc (though I've heard that chances of that are super low), and also does a good job of keeping my pc cool at 4k gaming. Oh, and 50 bucks cheaper is 50 bucks cheaper.

Honestly, I understand completely. I had been gaming on a 2nd hand dell workstation from 2012 with a failing hdd for a decade before I finally built my own pc.

I wanted all the power ahaha. But let my common sense win over and “only” got a 9070xt. Then I watched as the 5090 went from 5.5k AUD to over 11k AUD 😅. And I’m feeling a lot of regret for sure. (Also didn’t help that I upgraded to a 4k oled recently, so the needs have changed a bit.

Nameless913

Gotcha! Thanks. I built my pc for 1080p gaming, which my 9070xt was more than enough for. But then recently I upgraded my monitor to a 4k one. So part of me really wants to upgrade to get that extra bit of performance if there is any.

Nameless913

If you don’t mind me asking, what differences did you notice from upgrading from the 9070xt to the 5080?

Nameless913

It’s the same reasoning as when rich dudes have a garage full of Ferraris they don’t use, just so that they can flex em. (No judgement though, after I got into pc building I finally understand the mentality)

Nameless913

Congrats!!

I think I’m having similar thoughts with my own 9070xt. Am currently torn between the 5080 and a used 4090.

Nameless913

Hey! Thanks for the alternate perspective! I’m leaning towards waiting for a 5080 with 24gb at this point. Due to the newer Blackwell architecture, the warranty, and potentially less of a risk than buying used.

Currently, my 9070xt can’t run Cyberpunk with Ray Tracing even with frame generation. So that was part of what led me to consider upgrading.

Nameless913

Wasn't AMD ceding the high end gaming pc market to Nvidia? Hence the 9070XT being a high midrange card, and there being no AMD answer to the 5080 or 5090?

I wouldn't be opposed to an AMD flagship if there was one on the horizon, but I'm not sure if there is one?

Anyway, I know that the 4090/5080 is only giving me about 30% more performance for 3 times the price. But I've been gaming on a second hand 1060 GTX for half a decade. And was on something worse for the 5 years before that (it was a stock gpu from a Dell prebuilt I think? I don't remember). So now that I've got the means to splurge for a pc, it's been a dream of mine to get the best performing pc possible.

Nameless913

That's what my googling has suggested too. With the 4090 having more CUDA cores and a larger memory bus. And though hindsight is 2020, I'm regretting not getting a 5090 for under 4000 usd when I had a chance. Now it's twice the cost it was before and likely being discontinued as well, so I'll likely never get one 😭.

Still, I'm not the most familiar with online market places. So I definitely have worries regarding getting scammed or having a card fail with no warranty.

Nameless913

Yeah! I currently have the 9070XT. So what you're suggesting is my second option. To wait for a 5080 24gb and then sell the 9070XT. I am just considering getting a 2nd hand 4090 because of the way gpu prices have skyrocketed.

Nameless913

I'm not using it for Ai. Just for gaming. I did also consider getting the 5080 16gb. But benchmarks do have the 4090 as the better card (especially for 4k), so that's why I was debating between the 4090 or the (so far unconfirmed) 5080 with 24gb vram.

Nameless913

I don't have much experience with ebay, so I'm going to ask what might be a very silly question. But how can i make sure a seller is reputable?

Nameless913

Yeah, that's where I'm at right now. It's basically down to the guaranteed performance and availability of the 4090 vs the lack of warranty and potential risk of buying used.

Nameless913

Dude, if you couldn't come up with a rebuttal after 4 hours you could've just moved on with your life 😂.

Nameless913

Owners have been letting key guys walk for tax reasons long before there were team building penalties for going over the apron. The Lakers wouldn't re-sign Caruso after their championship because they didn't want to go over the tax. The Thunder famously traded Harden to stay under. Denver let KCP and Bruce Brown walk. Sarver famously sold the pick that became Rondo for cash at the height of the 7SOL suns. There was no team building reason to make those moves, but the owners judged the loss of talent to be worth less than the tax savings they got.

It's not the exact same situation with the 2nd apron, but you're a fool if you think trading Jaylen Brown for PG was a beneficial move for roster building.

Nameless913

Well, that’s rude. I know from history that being forced to panic trade (aka avoiding the apron) rarely works out. Nor does trading away a top 20 player and trying to make up for his production with spare parts. I also know that most picks don’t pan out. And that championship windows are very short in the modern era. With all that in mind, when a team has proven to be able to win a championship, my philosophy is to try maximise things as much as they can while the championship team is in their prime, before tearing things down and rebuilding. Rather than trying to do two timelines or get bounced in the second round for a decade. With that philosophy, I think things like no MLE and limited trades are less crippling than panic trading a star.

The luxury tax has no penalty but financial, the only reason most owners avoid it is because they like money more than they like maximising their chance at a championship.

Nameless913

Sure, but none of those disadvantages are worth trading a player of KAT’s caliber for spare parts.

No one that the Knicks can get for the MLE or buyout market or via sign and trade are equal to KAT (or Mitch Rob who they also let walk). Who they would be retaining for free resource wise.

All the downsides you mentioned are bad. But none are as bad as being forced to trade KAT for Randle and to let Robison walk for free. Sure, don’t foolishly walk into the second apron. But on the other hand we’re seeing teams tear down their championship teams because they’re worried they won’t be able to make trades or will get less valuable picks in a few years.

Nameless913

Is it? At this point, the hard cap feels more like a boogyman that teams will use as an excuse to trade away/not re sign their players.

Nameless913

You’d be surprised by how many gms don’t make the obvious pick.

Nameless913

It was kind of a dream of mine to eventually own one 😅. Can’t justify the current price though, so maybe this’ll be one dream that doesn’t come true.

Nameless913

And how are they going to retool when they trade KAT for a worse player? They already don’t have any picks or assests left, how is letting KAT get disgruntled until he requests a trade a good team building move?

It’ll be even more hilarious two years from now when they need to trade someone but KATs already walked in free agency and the Knicks are still over the cap. Refusing to pay the guys who got them there has killed teams in the past and it’ll kill them again.

Nameless913

Maybe he meant Eddie Curry 😂

Nameless913

Pay out the ass for a guy who everyone knows is disgruntled and you won’t extend? Like how the Knicks paid out the ass to get him?

Nameless913

You could trade him for something good, like what the last team who had to trade him for apron reasons got. How does Julis Randle sound to you?

Nameless913

For me, the idea of doing well would be putting yourself in the best position to win a championship, and I don’t think any of the teams mentioned would have benefited from trading say, Jrue Holiday, Khris Middleton, or Jamal Murray for spare parts. Like you mentioned, the Nuggets traded MPJ for spare parts due to not being willing to go into the second apron. And here they are.

There’s no guarantee that trading players away will net you an equal player in return. And that goes double if teams know you’re doing it to avoid the apron (see the wolves horrid return for KAT).

Also, you mention injuries a lot. But injuries can happen to anyone. The nuggets traded MPJ and he proceeded to have a healthy season. There’s no guarantee that if they traded AG, that the guy he was traded for won’t also get injured.

If you have an mvp caliber player, you need to maximise his prime because the chances of getting one are low.
