but fiction affects real life and the human psyche. it also influences stigmas, stereotypes, and perceptions of the world. an official study by the department of psychological and brain sciences (dartmouth college) and the department of psychology (ohio state university) says: “People spend much of their free time engaging with narrative fiction. Research shows that, like real-life friends, fictional characters can sometimes influence individuals' attitudes, behaviors, and self-beliefs.” https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37401007/ this is a study on the affect that fiction has on “lonelier people”, but this statement is about all individuals that consume fictional media, not just lonely people. that said, anybody could probably deduce that many (not all, but many) of the people who are writing fanfiction, especially incestuous fanfiction, are what you would call “lonelier individuals”.

adoptive relationships are not taken as seriously as they should be, and these ships don’t only show this, they worsen it. whether you like it or not, they have influenced at least one person to think differently about adoptive relationships, more sexually, invalidly, and that’s already one too many.

so no, it’s not just fiction. fictional characters aren’t just dolls. they’re created by people and inspired by people. that doesn’t mean they’re real, but it means theyre not meaningless. it’s less about real people being hurt in real time and the long term affects of consuming these kinds of things and feeling 1, no shame, and 2, like it’s normal. it’s not.

the bible doesn’t speak about loving, consensual same-sex relationships …. it can’t condemn something it never even talks about. keep in mind that the verses that appear to condemn homosexuality were written thousands of years ago and retranslated thousands of times on top of that by imperfect people with certain agendas and their own interpretations. i’m not gonna go on because if someone really wants to be convinced or even to just consider the possibility that god isn’t obsessed with hating gay people, it’d be easy for them to look into that individually.
