I totally agree, but I am guilty of exactly this. My now husband’s cat hated me and I freaking love cats. I’ve rescued over 20. But this cat kept shitting and pissing on anything that smelled like me. We did the calming spray, dozens of vet appointments, extra play time, different food, different kitty litter, tried everything. But over several years she wouldn’t stop. We lived with plastic on all furniture and had to keep the door to our bedroom shut or she’d shit on my pillow. We were both in tears when we dropped her off at her new home. With a single older lady, which she loved. We made light of it later as a way to cope but not as callously as this.

I’ve also had many pets in my life and never crossed my mind to get rid of any, though there are circumstances where it is better for the animal to find somewhere new.

I think all responses are correct. This nation has a history of the police and federal forces being weaponized against minorities, as well as to suppress dissent. From slave catchers to McCarthyism and beyond. That is indisputable, this not a new problem.

Though I think the commenter who pointed out that Trump is a factor is also correct. Trump and the Republican Party are responsible for making I.C.E. the most funded law enforcement agency, this is new. The consequences of this are the increased militarization and presence of I.C.E. in American cities. Additionally, utilizing them specifically against democratic strongholds to harass and intimidate everyone is a fairly uniquely Trump phenomenon.

I think we can both acknowledge the through line of the brutalization of BIPOC for centuries in America, while still acknowledging that this moment is uniquely dangerous for any progress that was made. While the targets of the violence is not different, this moment is different because what of what we stand to lose.

Fast forward to the repeal of Roe v. Wade and the tepid response from democrats, proposing no court reform, nothing. Then, both Biden and Harris make abortion access central issue of their campaign in an attempt to drive women to the polls when the reality is democrats had over a decade to enact real protections.

It's the Republican agenda, yes, but it's the complicity of Democrats that permits it.

I don’t think asking about experience with crime is in and of itself racist, no. I said, I question the motives and I do indeed think a conservative suburbanite sharing the story of a beautiful white girl being brutalized in a majority-black city, and then inviting people to dogpile on said city, does indeed have some racial implications.

I have lived and worked in Detroit for the last decade, I am incredibly solutions oriented. I volunteer as a youth leader and teach kids to swim and kayak, I volunteer at food banks, I love my neighbors and my city. Detroiters are working hard to make this city safe. I don’t plug my ears and scream “nah nah nah” when people talk about crime. I acknowledge crime and in doing that I can also acknowledge the context in which they are shared and btw Detroit’s crime rates are the lowest they’ve been in a half century.

Meeep will say this, most Americans genuinely aren’t aware of the shit we’ve pulled, most Americans don’t know why tf we invaded Iraq and Afghanistan. And it’s not just a lack of awareness, it’s a media and education ecosystem that peddles false narratives. It’s really bc of the internet that we’re seeing the facts of our atrocities enter into mainstream discourse.

I would really suggest you look more into the history of Palestine, it is really not Hamas propaganda. The Palestinian people have been strategically displaced and denied their history for a century. I highly recommend Rashid Khalidi's A Hundred Year's War on Palestine (there is a free audio version on youtube). I'm not saying this to be condescending, I say this as a jewish person who was a Holocaust educator until 2 weeks ago. I have two degrees in history and never in any formal setting encountered the events of the Nakba. Reading this history really challenged my identity, it was uncomfortable to acknowledge that my people who experienced the Holocaust could also be perpetrators of such extreme and calculated violence.
