After hearing all the commotion about this I did my research and am surprised to see that it isn't what I expected. So it seems he served in the IDF and was recounting what he did there. This is not accurate. I read it from the actual source. No mention of beating the family. This was for an "arrest". Obviously they didn't want him taking away their daughter so there was some tension as described. Some physical contact. It also seems after this particular event, he had a mental breakdown.

I was expecting to see stories of him doing human rights violations. This is tame in comparison, albeit obviously suspect. Service is mandatory over there.

The facial changes isn't caused by fat. It's due to swelling. That's much different than gaining or losing weight.
