I would have them removed from my class under the behavior policy. I’ve dealt with this once. That student poisoned the entire class. It made the experience miserable for everyone. It’s not conducive of a learning environment. Bye, Felicia. Don’t let them ruin your course. Kick them out, and don’t give it a second thought.
OkReplacement2000
Exactly. Cuts down on the messages.

I give everyone one pass, no questions asked. Everything else is 10% per day— except true emergencies, genuinely severe issues. It makes it so much easier on me, operationally. I have examples of severe issues and minor issues in my syllabi, which cuts down on the number of requests.
When they write with minor issues, I say, “I need to uphold the policy evenly, but you do have your one no questions asked pass.”
Then I reassure them, “the 10% off is not going to change your letter grade unless it becomes a consistent pattern.” This helps.
I just got to a point where I felt like I didn’t like drawing the line between grandma being sick and the brother-in-law having a seizure and dad’s car broke down and the roommate’s cat was sick and the sprained ankle at soccer. There’s a line in there, and I don’t want to spend brain power looking for it.
I give the university bereavement policy extensions— the same as what employees get— and then very serious illnesses (not a cold or a sprained ankle, and no elective procedures during the semester). And if your WiFi was out or you moved or your car broke down or you have to go on a work trip or your baby dunked your laptop in the bath or or or, you have the one pass, no questions asked.
I think part of what we’re doing here is we’re helping them prepare for professional workplace norms and expectations, so I model my policies after them.
(Yes, all examples are drawn from real students)

See, and in my home, if the stapler is jammed, I would reach out to my handiest Gen Z child for assistance. They’re not without value.

The question is whether the new text is yours— as in copyrightable. Legally, it’s gray area, and I wouldn’t mess around with dissertation content. Did you know they can be revoked? Years down the line, if they come up with a validated AI detector, you could lose your doctorate.
OkReplacement2000
I swear to the good lord I want to record each and every interaction I have in this day and age. This is ridiculous— the things people come up with to complain about. Great that you had a recording.
OkReplacement2000
Right. Or my student who had a complicated story about how they had done everything in advance, but something happened and the assignment just didn’t upload properly when they submitted. I was able to confirm that they had not even clicked on the assignment instructions until after the due date.
OkReplacement2000
I have absolutely say while teaching when my back hurts. I don’t think it’s unprofessional, but I do think they engage better with a little bit of dramatic flair, so I try walking around
OkReplacement2000
Super easy to check the interactions report. I think most everyone knows how to work it and will check for any point of conflict.
But I don’t see the issue here. It was available to you. Unless it said “do not read!” I don’t see any issue.
OkReplacement2000
Yes. We definitely can.
OkReplacement2000
This is true. The only people who care about student loans are the people carrying them— and occasionally their (our) parents.
OkReplacement2000
Yup. I would let them know that most grad schools require a 3.0 or better but that they will sometimes consider the trajectory, if a student shows significant improvement in their upper division courses. That is motivational, and it is also the truth.
You could also help keep their hope alive by saying that sometimes working for a while and demonstrating capability that way can strengthen an application.
OkReplacement2000
This is unfortunate. We’re careful to try to protect junior TT faculty from too much teaching prep because you need that time and energy for research.
I would make a plan to just go in person from now on. It does sound like she’s just overwhelmed, but you need to protect your long-term interests, and too many new preps early on can really tank a research agenda.

But most people live near a community college or have access to online education. Paying for dorm living is paying for a social experience, and the $2k/month they’re charging for that these days is not a good financial decision for anyone who doesn’t have money to burn.
OkReplacement2000
That’s what I’m wondering. Is that what the cost is for? If so, imagine paying $30k for a party. It wouldn’t be smart. Think of it as modeling good financial decision-making for kids.
Mine lived at home for undergrad. They didn’t complain about it. They’re now happy and healthy, well adjusted young adults who have NO student loan debt!
Imagine how good it feels to not have a mountain of debt hanging over your head or your parents’ heads when you start your young adult life… feels better than any amount of partying would.
OkReplacement2000
My friend, I would not pay this much for an undergraduate degree. I’m a professor. I value education. This is crazy for a bachelor’s degree. I would encourage him to get an associate’s at a community college first. Really a shame that a state school costs this much. Is it mostly dorms?
Mine lived with me during UG and graduated with no debt. They are a-ok, doing fine now that they’ve graduated. Did not miss out on the whole dorm experience.
OkReplacement2000
Thanks! No buyback for SAVE? It’s the administrative forbearances only then?
We do get credit for save months paid, right? And REPAYE before that?
OkReplacement2000
If you buyback, what rate is that? The rate you were at before the forbearance or the current? My current is about $300/mo more. I wasn’t planning to deal with buyback, but maybe I should.
OkReplacement2000
Nope. It’s not a myth. It is true that the concept of learning styles has been misapplied/overblown/oversimplified in educational circles, but it isn’t the case that everyone learns equally well through every domain. There are within and between person differences in learning relative to delivery method.
OkReplacement2000
It’s not really that simple. It’s true that there isn’t evidence to support the idea that a person has one only learning style, it is true that some people learn better from some channels than others.
If you’re really arguing that there is no difference in learning across different domains, that’s a wild take.

Define healthcare crisis.
Things are better now than they were before the ACA. Improvement is still needed.
OkReplacement2000
This is not “slang.” It is a very literal meaning of a “quarter” of an hour.
My Gen Z kids understand it perfectly well.
Are you faculty?
OkReplacement2000
Serious.
OkReplacement2000
You tried what? Having a graded assignment of their notes? I’ve done that, and it works just fine.
We don’t have time to go back and look at the earlier submissions, and we definitely don’t have time to go back and look at your comments in that draft. Also, that’s funny. Don’t worry about it. You’re fine. We’re not as uptight as you might think.
