Makes sense. McDonald's reputation for being associated with toxic crap is strong enough as it is.

Lake Placid is much more isolated. Lake George is close to Glens Falls and Queensbury and Saratoga, which have a lot of things to do all year round.

Ok_Address8167

I personally love Lake George in late October and November when there are minimal crowds. Just realize that most of the businesses are closed. Not all, of course. I personally prefer it this time of year for precisely that reason. The vibe is much more chill than in the summer.

As for the LBGT+ question, it's a resort town. They want your money. Openly LBGT+ folks walking around there are not uncommon. Can't guarantee you won't run into an bigoted a*hole but you'll probably be fine.

Then don't complain when they don't vote for you. Not that this is much of an option in the North Country since Dems rarely run any candidates to vote for in the first place. Which is the entire point of my comment.

Large chunks of the north country voted for Andrew Cuomo in 2010 and Bill Clinton in 1996, as well as Schumer multiple times and Obama twice. Doesn't quite fit in the narrative outside haters want to peddle...

Ok_Address8167

Hope it’s wrong. I like that brick is not the typical homer who insults your intelligence.

Check the forum. This is what like 80% of the posts are about.

Unfortunate but not surprising. Westchester Stadium situation was terrible

The fact is that we won't know how much economic development is lost because of APA regulations as long as said regulations exist. But it would be pretty disingenuous for anyone to suggest that said number is zero.

Sure it's easy to speak vaguely of "the engine needs [to be] fixed." It's harder to come up with concrete suggestions within the existing framework, as evidenced by the fact that you do not.

Regardless, this all obscures the point that the funding you complain about pays for the state's ability to hamstring localities.

Ok_Address8167

You are far more toxic than the OP.

Ok_Address8167

Perhaps. But it doesn't explain when the HOME fans are screaming bias on every single call that is against what the mob is screaming. Fans are biased by definition.

Ok_Address8167

Normal people don't vote for pedophiles. The "Protect Our Kids" party does all the time.

Ok_Address8167

No it does not presuppose that.

It is a fact that less economic development is possible due to APA restrictions.

How much that lost economic development would actually help is a different question.

And remember, I cited a mixture both of restrictions on development and the huge amount of state land in the Park. Not just the former.

So it's less land that can be developed and less can be done with that greatly lessened amount.

It certainly brings some benefits, such as increased tourism. But the restrictions also limit how much the localities can take advantage of this. Restrictions they don't have, say, in Utah.

The Adirondacks is a very specific situation that is unique in the world. The closest analogy is the Catskills. There is no Catskill Park agency but they also lose 46% of their land to outside governments (NYS and NYC) that can't be developed privately. They also struggle economically.

I am supportive of this trade off for the greater good benefits. But I recognize that it is a trade off. And I still view the funding as compensation for this tradeoff imposed on locals against their will.

And given that it was imposed on locals against their will in a region that has always had a strong property rights sentiment, you don't have to be a stark raving mad fascist to see where the resentment at what they view as paternalism comes from. Those of us in the region who are Democrats struggle to counter this sentiment.

Ok_Address8167

As would the 2014 version of Elise Stefanik.

Ok_Address8167

I am fine with those protections. But I recognize the harm they cause locally and that's why I'm okay with this compensation agreement.

Ok_Address8167

I understand where you're coming from but consider this. For the Adirondacks specifically, it is an arrangement.

The state is severely limiting economic development in the Adirondacks due to the APA regulations on private land as well as how much land the state itself owns. 45% of the whole Park and almost 2/3 of Hamilton County is owned by the state, not counting shuttered but not repurposed prisons. This was imposed on locals without their consent.

So I don't view state funding here as a "major drain on tax dollars" or subsidies or handouts. I essentially view it as compensation for the above. The residents of the whole state get a greater good benefit from this: climate change mitigation, recreation access, etc. The funding you describe is the price they pay to offset the harm done to local communities.

Ok_Address8167

That goes to my point. They write this off from an electoral perspective. If they put some resources here, they could be competitive. Fascism always flourishes in a vacuum.

Though it's telling how much the Republican Party has changed in recent years. The APA, DEC, Lake George Park Commission, many important state environmental regulations and a large chunk of additions to the forest preserve were created by a Republican governor and a Republican state senate (often with a Republican state Assembly) just in the last 60 years.

Ok_Address8167

It's a testament to how much state Democrats ignore the region. In the Adirondacks/NNY, people's hatred of NYC area Dems far exceeds their love of anything else. They feel like state Dems don't give a crap about anything up here. I'm a Dem and they're not entirely wrong in their diagnosis, even if their prescription is way off. Local misleadership (overwhelmingly Republican) has left much of the region in bad shape. But Republicans win by default because Dems don't even bother to try.

Ok_Address8167

They've even turned on hard core conservatives who didn't abandon their conservative values like Kinzinger and Cheney. When you are a bunch of lemmings jumping off a cliff, anyone who remains on terra firma is "radical."

Ok_Address8167

The orange death cult would call Ronald Reagan a far left radical socialist. lol

Ok_Address8167

No. Neutral site cup finals make sense in smaller countries. But the US is the size of a continent.

France, the largest country in Europe not at war, is about the size of Texas. England is about the size of Alabama.

The US is about the size of the entirety of Europe.

Put it at a home venue, get a big crowd and great atmosphere. Putting New England v Seattle in Dallas front of 2000 people is not going to help the tournament's reputation.

Ok_Address8167

Leaning into her image as a status quo tool is a bold move in an anti-establishment era like this.

Also an odd line of attack considering he also spent 6 years as the leader of a legislative chamber, something Collins has never been entrusted to do.

But it does fit in with the Republican elite snobbery against anybody who's ever held a job in the real world. No wonder all their policies harm those of us who work for a living and aren't dependent on taxpayer-funded salaries, pensions, health care, etc.
