Thank you for your comment! I tend to prefer filling space in a flag but I agree, fish + feathers could be made smaller here.

Thank you, yes those would be good ways to simplify on the design and make it easier to manufacture/print.

I made the post yesterday about the sacred cod; here is my attempt at a new Mass flag and the symbols I picked.

Symbols:

- 6 turkey feathers. This motif is lifted from one of the finalist designs for the Massachusetts flag redesign contest. Mass was the 6th state to join the union.

- The North American turkey is Mass’s co state bird with the black capped chickadee.

- Red color darkened to cranberry maroon invoking the colors of higher education in Massachusetts, similar to UMass, Harvard, MIT, BU, and Boston College among others. Also bogs.

- The cod/fishing industry is important to Mass. This also represents the wooden Sacred Cod statue that hangs in the Massachusetts state house.

- The white is the waves of Massachusetts bay/Atlantic.

- The blue represents the name of the state, which is “by the blue hills” in the indigenous Massachusett Wampanoag language.
