Thank you so much for the kind words, and especially for the advice! I’ve looked up the monkey breath thing but get different results — but absolutely need to utilise my diaphragm more and get the compression out of my neck, so will be working on that a lot.
You rock man, thank you 🙏🏻

I’ve sent you a dm brother 🙏🏻

There’s a TikTok account where a guy posts videos of him lip-syncing to AI covers and claims it’s all him. No explanation of where the tracks come from or anything.
He’s got people constantly telling him he’s the best singer they’ve ever heard and trying to buy ‘his music’.
Incredibly infuriating for someone who has spent their life trying to improve as a singer and musician, but he’s getting the exact response people like me have been trying to achieve, with none of the work.

The only things that seems wrong to me us the sound of the recording.
Vocally you seem to be good enough to be able to shine through even that terrible, whistle-y feedback tone that whatever you’re using to record is creating.
If you sang into a good mic in a nice room I think we’d all be blown away.
To be clear: great, great voice. That part is brilliant!
Own-Protection-664
Best not to acknowledge it though, it’s like inviting a vampire into your home 😳😩
Own-Protection-664
I think she visited me in a nightmare last night though. There’s no escape 😫

Did you get a lot from the opera coach? I ask because I live on an island, and all the contemporary vocal coaches here are females — not that I’m saying they can’t teach me anything — but their chest range almost starts where mine finishes (I can sing a strong D2 and speak like Darth Vader 😅) but there is a male opera coach here.

Thank you so much! 🙏🏻

Ah thank you, good plan, will work on enunciation 🙏🏻😃 I appreciate your time!
Own-Protection-664
Ahh now you say it, I hear it! Thank you, this is really something tangible that I can work on 🙏🏻 much appreciated! Kermit time 🐸😅
Own-Protection-664
Haha, never thought of it that way, thank you man! 🙏🏻
Own-Protection-664
I actually agree. You’ve sort of helped me win an argument with my wife 😅 she says to me all the time “why are you worried about singing high stuff, you have a man’s voice”… and I always tell her that whenever I listen back, I just hear a sort of drone-like quality… until I’m either in head voice or pushing into something that sounds sort of strained.
Thank you for listening and giving an honest opinion! 🙏🏻
Own-Protection-664
Me too. I think we should try and walk away, quickly, but not so quickly that she notices we’re trying to get away.
Own-Protection-664
She’s literally insulting us, subconsciously, with headwear. That’s serious 4D chess.
That’s not an enemy I want to make!

Two… ‘ats

Thank you so much! Do you mean like adding a pharyngeal sound to that head register?
I’ve played with that but I get an almost ‘Kermit’ voice going on then 😅 I must be doing it wrong.
That said, I’ve found an almost Christina Aguilera-esque growl sound (not the singing, just the growl) in that pharyngeal posture that does fatten things up, but would be overkill to use on anything but the odd word.
It’s very tricky, but I will try that back placement and thank you again for the advice and kind words!

Hey thank you so much for the compliment on my guitar playing! I have been playing guitar since I could hold one, but singing — or at least trying to thoughtfully sing — is relatively new to me.
That’s the frustrating thing with my head voice — it’s utterly effortless compared to any other way I try and sing, it’s plenty loud, and when I use a pitch detector program (I use Voce Vista Video) it’s far, far more accurate, pitch-wise, than I am when singing in my ‘speech’ register.
If I only sang in head voice, I doubt anyone would say anything. In fact I’ve jokingly sang at karaoke using only that sound and my friends were amazed that I can do it at all, given how low my speaking voice is. Visually, too, I am 6’4 and 290lbs, and it doesn’t ‘match’.
But it sounds so different than my chest register (which I prefer the sound of) that I struggle to use them in the same songs… and I almost feel embarrassed to!
I am trying to learn how to fatten it up or thin out the lower so that they match, but it’s a struggle! 😅

My wife, kids and dog most of all. But then followed by knowing that I have finally a few nice guitars that were paid for entirely by gigging, and the fact that I can play them pretty much how I always wanted to, at this point in my life, and that I earned it through dedicated practice.
Own-Protection-664
Ah thank you so much, for the kind words, and the thoughtful critique — I definitely think the same thing about the voices not matching — I’ve been trying to figure out mix and I think I’m getting closer to something useable in the upper register here:

But I sort of deliberately stayed in that lighter mode on the above sing idea because it felt relatively effortless in comparison, and I keep hearing and reading people say singing is supposed to be relaxed… but when I do relax I end up with that thinner sound 😅 it’s so tricky! I really would like to find that happy medium.
Thank you again so much for the honest opinion, and the compliments on the song idea… really nice to read that 🙏🏻😃
Own-Protection-664
I like it man. Honestly it’s the perfect voice for story-telling, and you should lean into songs with a narration-style lyric in them imo, as you’d kill at it.
Own-Protection-664
Ah thank you 🙏🏻 I am working on being able to be more relaxed whilst keeping the grit and such 😃
Own-Protection-664
Thank you 🙏🏻 I am working hard on that stuff, and I use more of my head voice on the latest video I put up on the sub. I feel like I’m making headway, and I’ll definitely bear in mind keeping my tongue out of the way … as soon as I read that I realised I could feel what you mean even when I think about singing! You switch lightbulb on for me, thank you 🙏🏻😃
Own-Protection-664
Aww maaaan that’s such a compliment! Honestly I don’t hear it in myself… I mean my guitar playing is one thing (I’ve been doing that since I was 8 y/o) but vocally, I thought I was in for a roasting here!
Thank you so much, honestly 🙏🏻 There’s a bit more of an example of my playing on the latest video I posted on this sub, if you were interested in hearing it :)

Tone first, then learn distortion/rasp.
Look at Matt Heafy’s videos on his YouTube channel… I know it’s not the same type of distortion your seeking, but his Ron Davidson ‘through the nostrils’ warm up demo (he shows it a few times on different videos) explains the way I’ve always found that I can distort to beyond anything I need, in stages, and do so for four sets of two hour solo gigs over a weekend with no loss of voice afterwards.
Hey brother, I’ve dm’d you a link 🙏🏻😃
