Yeah, I drove that stretch this summer in the dark and pouring rain. It was unpleasant, to say the least.

Right, so I was downvoted because in the 80's we had to choose between power or food when the cost of power was technically more. Meanwhile, the article was saying that people have to choose between power and food today too...

Then you go on to note things that, you know...existed then too. lol HVAC, washers, dryers, dishwashers, fridges...lol. Just to be clear, this was the 1980s, not the 1880s. We had all of those things THEN too, and they were not nearly as energy efficient as they are today. (Psst: There were computers and janky dial up proto-internet service, video game systems, TVs, also!)

Of the things listed, home size and wider adoption of AC are really the primary drivers as consumption is up 40%. But the unit cost is still down. In todays dollars, power was (as an average) about $0.26 kWh vs today at $0.19 kWh. Which is about a 27% drop in cost. So, really...that delta you talk about, in terms of real dollars is more like a a 13% increase.

I'd argue it's stuff like healthcare, housing, and other expenses (discretionary ones, like streaming, mobile phones, etc) are WAY more expensive now than in the past.

I don't do too many group rides these days. I stopped because there were too many angry Republicans in the groups.

Power costs are certainly high, but growing up in a very low cost of energy area (abundant hydropower) in the 80s and this was a problem then too. I remember there would be mornings I could see my breath in the house. I recall in college being so cold that I could barely type while working on homework.

Not to minimize the issue today, but power was MORE expensive on average back then, than it is now (same for a lot of things, actually).

My neighbors include a house nobody has lived in for years. So, when compared to my neighbor, my usage is VERY HIGH! (I also have solar panels and an EV and have invested heavily in energy saving appliances, so...go figure.)

I happened to be on steroids for a bit due to a health issue. Jeez! I had no idea. The juice was real! That said, while it was kind of fun, I added notes to my rides that indicated that it was a consequence of the medication. In other words, I wasn't even willing to claim my performance even when only comparing to myself!

So, yeah...it's f*cked up that amateurs dope to win races.

Personal_Benefit_402

I was thinking something along this lines. Is it possible to enter these races in a fashion that allows you to run them, without your time being counted against others? In that situation, you're just racing against yourself/time. Obviously, this would need to be a different starting class.

It's a lovely park. I'm pretty sure I my kid and I were barely spared being trampled by a bison near where the first photo was taken. I recall walking along, enjoying the scenery and awestruck by the nearby bison. Then one of them started paying close attention to me and my child. Suddenly, I realized that the animal was maybe a 100 ft away and that we'd made a grave error. We slowly backed away and scampered out of there when it felt like we were far enough away.

"There are things more important than money to Kansans."

Yep, those thing would be what's up under someone's kilt and where they're going pee.

My kid did go to AL. When we started the bus service was good. It's never recovered from Covid. While it's better today than it was a few years ago, it's still not what it was (mostly because they can't keep bus drivers, from what I gather). There were a couple times where my kid was dropped off an hour and a half after school ended. That said, I was able to get ahold of the transportation coordinator and get updates of a sort. So far this year, it's the best it's been in a very long time.

As for the "accident", this is surely an oversight. While it might have been obvious to you, it might not have been to the teacher, who has 20 other kids in the room. If the teacher had known, they would have likely directed your child to the school nurse and then the uniform closet for new clothes.

I'm prone to charge to 100% on long distance drives (at least at the start) and during winter. With my plug-in hybrid I was always plugging in every day, sometimes multiple times a day. Nowadays with my I5 it's more like when I'm getting near or below 100 miles range, which is often about once a week.

"It honestly just seems like you guys visit other cities and you like their trains, so you come back and demand the same be done here. "

Uh...well, as a guy who's ridden those trains and come back home and thought the same, I'd say you are probably right on this point.

I've supported the streetcar over the years and while I find the idea of a train to the airport appealing, after digging through this thread I think you're right about the idea of "neighborhood-scale transit". What would actually change my habits about getting around town? If I could walk up the block and hop on something convenient that took me to places I need to go regularly.

I'm now probably 30 years in on wearing only MTB/Gravel shoes on my road bikes, using various MTB pedals over the years (SPDs, then Frogs for decades, now ATAC).

Been here, done that, but with fewer cats (Mom and two kittens...mom remains.)

Personal_Benefit_402

I grew up with cats and have had them on/off over the years. One or two is fine (the range I've always lived under). Three is questionable, but it happens (for example, I fostered some kittens until they were ready for adoption). Four or more an you're in crazy cat person territory (which I work hard to avoid, because it would be easy to get there).

I had some weird issues last week, where the internet connection would blip out periodically, but it has been fine since.

Personal_Benefit_402

This is the way. It's also pretty decent on the other side of Ward Parkway, but it's a little more difficult to get about due to the lack of N/S streets between the E/W streets.

Personal_Benefit_402

Oh, this is awesome.

Personal_Benefit_402

He will, but it's just before he takes you back to his place.

Personal_Benefit_402

Yes! Weird window pane mirror selfies and burred out women in the photos...such odd choices.

Also, telling people "I don't do small talk...let's cut to the chase..." reads a**hole.

Personal_Benefit_402

These days I take people saying "apolitical" as cover for "I voted for Trump/MAGA." This used to be how folks interpreted "moderate", but I think now you're either on one side or the other.

Personal_Benefit_402

This is right. You can set expectations and provide information without making your customer feel bad.

I remember one old school neighborhood shop that had been around for 30 or 40 years, within walking distance from my house. The owner was such a jerk (he's dead now and the shop is now gone), that I gave up taking my bikes to shops in general and learned how to do my own work.

Personal_Benefit_402

Yes! Some of these were the same data I saw back then.

It was straight up "price fixing". What I think most people don't understand any more, is that given market consolidation, you don't necessarily need people sitting in back smokey backrooms cooking the books. Additionally, there is plenty of ways for folks to simply aggregate data (for example: rents) and allow folks to calibrate to market trends.

York is full of white people. Mexico is fully of Mexicans. /s

Personal_Benefit_402

No, it was real and largely driven by limited capacity that, once it was shut down, or diverted to other products, couldn't rapidly shift back to make up with the (unanticipated) market growth and standing backorders that came about during Covid.
