Would it be better to keep an address in Japan for all administrative and banking purposes? Returning to Japan and going through registering everything again, reopening all bank accounts etc seems so much of a hassle.

I recommend the book Confessions of a Yakuza. You get a deep look into what Tokyo was like during the Taisho era. In one chapter he mentions throwing his gambling money across the canals before crossing the bridge because that’s where police was waiting. Canals were also built to control populations and increase security. A lot of other stories too; Japan was wild at the time.
