If you were routinely fucked over by authorities like people are in DRC, your attitude becomes distrustful of authority and institution, which has effects like these. Expecting people to spontaneously start reading peer-reviewed science when most people in the world have trouble understanding the esoteric and prolix writing style science demands is ridiculous. The original comment sets up a false dichotomy, as the implication is that it’s either personal responsibility vs colonialism, when in reality it’s both. Colonialism has played a definite role here. But so has a grave moral failing, which we see all the time in countries that were exploited by colonialism. The DRC has gotten some of the worst of it in the world.
