I do exactly this. I try to find some common thread to weave in, most players are open to a bit of collaboration with their backstories so that's not hard to do as long as it's interesting and you don't tell the players what the common thread is. Make it a mystery like the black ooze that killed a PCs younger sibling is actually dark magic material that is being hoarded by some faction. Oh and that other PC whose dad went missing a year ago, he actually stumbled on damning evidence against that faction, and an early quests has the players both run into said substance. boom, now you have those characters invested in the plot because they're personal. Why is the faction hoarding black magic material? Who is behind the attack on the families?
