I did prepay for my next cruise, but that is because I’m cruising with my aunts who rarely cruise and I wanted them to be able to budget everything ahead of time.

They really should just call it a service fee and lump it into the cruise fare. A gratuity by definition is something given voluntarily, beyond obligation.

From everything I’ve read, the daily gratuity offsets what the cruise line pays their employees to get them to their guaranteed wage. I’ll tip in cash instead so that it is actually a tip. I have my stack of small bills ready to go.

I did not prepay grat for my October cruise. This will be my first time going to guest services to remove the automatic daily charge.

We did cheers so that also includes the auto grat and we will tip on top of that.

Our chefs table reservation for night one added an automatic 20% grat on prepay.
