Chinese expats are diverse. Like, very, very diverse.
Knowing this is one of the benefits you get from learning Mandarin.
RecognitionOld2763
The cutoff time is kind of interesting, of course.
And one may wonder whether the maritime militia are to be considered peaceful or not. You see, South China Sea isn't exactly peaceful...

I think I've seen you several times in this sub and things you post have a vague apologist vibe.
I think you perhaps know better than I do that "a quick apology and things will get swept under the carpet" simply defies the underlying logic of China. Whoever gets into controversies stays controversial for quite a period of time ("sensitive people").

It's kind of a T1 privilege.
It really depends on how wuye messes things up. Either you get a spotless parking garage maintained by a permanent underclass or you get what OP posted.
There's no middle ground in China. I sometimes say that I doubt if China can perform better than western countries with the demographics and the cultural attitude (concerning what kind of working conditions are simply not tolerable) in the west. But that's perhaps not the most productive way to think about it...

Ultimately it's big company syndrome: it's hard to get clear signals from gamers so dev teams get signals from the internal hierarchies instead. And if a certain group (read: miseducated useful idiots) control too many important positions you get distorted signals.
A story as old as time.
RecognitionOld2763
Why should you classify them as French when they don't consider themselves French lol.
RecognitionOld2763
I've seen a couple videos and I won't say it has nothing to do with immigration.
Of course it's anecdotal but given the current atmosphere I doubt if any scientific investigation is going to be done about it. So saying it's about immigration and it's not are both not supported by evidence.
Also if you call FLI merely democratic socialist then perhaps you're missing the plot. I don't think sane democratic socialists will want to change the name of the French language or say explicitly that French population needs to be replaced.

Every foreign celebrity will eventually "offend national sentiments" one day. The hyper-sensitive atmosphere in China means you don't get to know what is considered offensive and what is not because they don't have a formal list of prohibited topics (obviously) so, ironically, no one really knows what is offensive and what is not.

The consent-ification of everything is getting out of control. Sure it's a must in things like sex of medical procedures but birth???
You should understand that the current consensus on consent is that it is a civil law concept applied to persons who are already there. Generalizing it to having children is not necessarily unreasonable but you need to make arguments supporting the generalization.
If all you see in human experience is suffering then I'd say developing weapons of mass destruction is moral because it, by virtue of killing everyone, stops future suffering. Which is absurd.
RecognitionOld2763
A lot of people don't like to hear that and handwave it.
Of course they don't because the trigger was Axis maritime blockade. Depicting Churchill as a supervillain isn't close to truth either.
RecognitionOld2763
then post-colonialism is basically the only perspective you're taught nowadays
Strange that years ago (and even now), if I said this, I'd be called far right or even a conspiracy theorist.
RecognitionOld2763
This sounds like a convincing natural experiment. We all know housing is important, but often fail to understand how. (And if you think about it, it probably also explains a part of the fertility advantage America has.)
RecognitionOld2763
that's inevitable.
A lot of things are inevitable in the US too, like the lack of political will to build HSRs.
RecognitionOld2763
visitors
I'll take you seriously if you say the voters.
Visitors... America doesn't lack wannabe migrants. Its sounds absurd but somehow that's the reality we have right now.

Cleanness in China varies a lot.
Most Chinese bathrooms are dirtier than their American counterparts. (Yes, you have incredibly dirty bathrooms even in tier 1 research universities.)
There's no graffiti in China. Regarding this I'd say there's an aspect of cultural homogeneity. I don't think reddit will let what I'm going to say next go through though.
The sidewalks are also cleaner - due to lower labor cost.
RecognitionOld2763
seeing graffiti everywhere, homeless encampments
I have things to reply to these observations which I don't think reddit will allow.
Also heavily processed food in China is a problem too or what else do you think you're eating in ma la tang lo.
RecognitionOld2763
That capability has been used to hunt down corrupt officials who’ve fled overseas thou.
And still not being used to enforce any meaningful labor protection, I'm afraid.
RecognitionOld2763
The "work and pay tax" argument is stupid as fuck. It's a bare minimum...
RecognitionOld2763
The most bizarre example is perhaps glazing China for having computational facilities open for researchers to use.
https://www.reddit.com/r/QuantumEconomy/comments/1v1ba3o/comment/oz06tzk/
Now if you do have scientific computing experiences you'll know why it's ridiculous.
RecognitionOld2763
As I always say, tiktok and increasingly reddit consider the mainstream media to have an anti-China bias. What I see is closer to an anti-west bias.
RecognitionOld2763
That's also what I want to say. "its economy is growing faster than the U.S." - since when is this something worth boasting?
RecognitionOld2763
I don't, I think what they can do is to identify who runs it and shut it down. At least if they're able to identify dissidents so efficiently they should use the efficiency in more meaningful things.

That "native Brits don't want the jobs" line appears to be never based on solid statistics. To get a satisfactory answer you have to control (a) employers intentionally skip natives because migrants are easier to control and (b) tribalism in hiring (e.g. the rumor that Pakistanis only hire Pakistanis, and the like).
Both are politically incorrect questions to ask so don't expect any empirical study to back or refute the claim that natives don't want these jobs. It is and likely will remain merely a propaganda talking point.
I remember quite a few Chinese people I talked with (many online, admittedly) didn't like the lights of Chongqing, considering it too "noisy".
I have no opinion on the matter.
