We have a BC/sheltie mix, 33 lb. He is easily bored by training and super noise sensitive. He's two years old and will often react to the toilet flushing and so much more. He does rally and parkour but he often seems anxious and never really happy.
Our prior dog was a 35 lb JRT/pug/ mutt mix. He was biddable, excited to learn and had a real off switch . Always ready for what is next.

Riley,
our border collie sheltie cross

My border collie isn't food motivated for training. However, we worked on allowing something he liked only after he takes a treat to learn the relationship and now he takes treats readily. Also having the treat be spreadable cheese or peanut butter on a spoon helped too.

It's crazy there is rebar in there!!

My border collie exhausts me: physically, mentally, and emotionally. Oh and financially.

I use an old plastic container with a lid and put the used bag in it.

Collar off to go in the crate, but otherwise the intention is to put it on at all other times

But some days 1 can feel like a whole lot. Lol

There are some noise maker games you can find to play with your dog where they control noise by knocking items over, etc. to help them with the unexpected nature of startling noises.

I would take him to a vet to see if he has any underlying health issues. If not then to a veterinary behaviorist, to evaluate and also to find reputable trainers from the veterinary behaviorist.

They are different here and I don't like them as much. So one less must-have at CFA for me. Good for the wallet and waistline

I ask my dog to sit or shake my hand or touch or I count cookies to get him to focus on me. He's a BC/sheltie mix who will refuse to move. If I can get him to walk with 123s I do that but it's not always successful

We do this too

It can take a while. It took months to get our first dog. We didn't realize that the shelter took numerous multiple applications for each dog and since we weren't first or second we were super unlikely to get the dog.
More recently we fostered a dog and as we had an 10 month old puppy, we made the decision not to keep her but only had two weeks to decide and in retrospect we should have kept her.
It can be a really hard process to adopt a dog.
However we went to an adoption event to get our current dog and they let us adopt in about one hour from review of our app to meeting him. But he's a border collie and difficult to keep happy.

It's so hard. I often feel like this. We lost our 14 little brown dog one year and two months ago. 2 weeks after he passed we got a puppy. On Christmas day this year, I sobbed at how much I miss our first dog. For months after we brought the new puppy home, I felt he was generic, so friendly and not much personality. I know I will always miss our first dog terribly. And it helps to remind myself that this is a new relationship and our new guy is his own "person" so to speak and we continue to learn about each other. It's been harder than I expected but I'm glad we rescued a dog that would otherwise have been homeless.

Maybe adding pumpkin would help

I feel the same with a 3 year old border collie/sheltie mix
