Eventually, but I think air traffic control has a longer runway (pun intended). Just because of accountability and the risks involved with air travel—the huge bureaucratic challenges would be the thing to slow down its implementation. The AI system would have to be completely up to human standard with little to no room for error and get the ok with the FAA.
That being said, I bet it’s just a matter of will power. Aircraft are already largely automated and flight is probably one of the oldest industries to work with autonomous technologies. With Auto-pilot, ILS, collision avoidance, auto-land features. Hell even descending, ascending, turning is conducted mostly with knobs. Why can’t air traffic control use the same principles? Also hasn’t Waymo been taking over driving recently? I’d think driving is arguably more dynamic than flight and harder to automated than commercial flight.
Saying all this as a previous student pilot.

I think everyone has to at least consider the future within their career choices in terms of AI. The advancements are getting too hard to ignore. My advice, pick an area of study that won’t be obviously automated. Things like data science or accounting are more risky. But engineering I think has a longer runway ahead of it. Especially things like civil engineering. But unfortunately if AI wipes out 30% of the workforce, every single career will affected anyway due to oversaturation. Just my opinion though.

Yep, we are what we call in the business “so unfathomably screwed that we will have to redefine what it means to be human living within an economic system in which human labour has no real utility and the rich and powerful own all the resources”
RelatablePanic
Are you kidding? That’s like the most original thought I’ve ever heard! I think something more along the lines “Me eat now” would be more common.

If we get to a point where we build machines that are truly more intelligent than we are, if there is some role or job that needs to be filled, AI can just create some program or robot to fill that role.
RelatablePanic
Yep. Couldn’t fight it anymore. The more I fought it the worse it got. Now I just accept I’m gonna do some awkward shit during social situations and people just have to accept that. Counterintuitively, it’s made me less awkward and more relaxed.

Or the disruption will be so great upon the workforce that it doesn’t matter what you choose because there will be too few jobs for too many people.

Oof just saw this that is nasty

So basically aid companies in destroying the entire workforce

Burns make it abundantly clear in all of his books that any improvement you seek will be found in actually doing the exercises. So anyone who isn’t doing the work hasn’t read his books.

This is basically what’s Buddhists call enlightenment. Pure contentment with just the joy of being. The end of needing is precisely the moment when suffering ends and peace begins.

27M, finally lost my virginity this year. I have a very similar story to yours. But when I was 26 I said enough is enough and told myself that I was gonna start trying to date no matter how uncomfortable or awkward I was. And my god was it uncomfortable. My feet were literally glued to the floor the first time I had to go out with a girl. All my anxieties, fears, shame were firing on all cylinders. It was like my brain thought I was a Giselle being chased by a Lion on the safari. Thinking that she will be painfully aware of how awkward and inexperienced I am. So how’d it go? Yea it was really awkward at times. It WAS uncomfortable. But after the first thirty minutes I started to settle down a little bit and we had a nice conversation. I even scored a second date with her in the end. It didn’t work out with her but I was flabbergasted how well I took it— it was almost like having a bad date was my worst fear and it came true and it turned out not so bad. In fact, it went badly and she still wanted to go on another!
I’m now at the point where dating, while still anxiety inducing and stressful, is FAR more manageable than the monster it once was. I’ve also told girls I’ve dated about my lack of experience and while it became a bit of a talking point initially, our connection to each other was far more important. The vibe I got from many girls was like, “yea he’s a little inexperienced but we’re laughing and having a great time, so who cares”.
My advice, just throw yourself in the water. Be absolutely terrified and awkward and go through the motions. Soon you’ll get used to it and you’ll stop judging yourself so harshly. Good luck OP. I understand how hard this shit is.

Yea sort of where my head is at right now. I mean for mathematicians, how could you view this purely as a tool when it has basically become faster, more intelligent and more creative than any mathematician that has ever existed. And if you think creative is a stretch, I heard the recent New York Times interview with Steven Strogatz where he describes how surprisingly elegant and creative Open AIs model solved Navier-Stokes. Combining two completely different subsets of mathematics in way that no one ever conceived possible.

Yea I have a bit more hope as a Canadian that we will be more proactive to protect our work force or install social policies like UBI as AI takes more jobs. But in America? Yea, 50% of Americans think universal healthcare is some communist wet dream when 90% of developed nations have it. So yea Elon, doubt your “Universal High Income” will actually materialize.

Ah you sweet flower child. Not quite.

When you are hypothesis testing, statistical inference can be achieved depending on what alpha you choose as your significance level. If your alpha is 0.05 and the result is 0.05, you can reject the null hypothesis and use statistical inference to interpret your results.
So yes the laws of statistics require a non-zero result, but can't we just lower the significance threshold to be a near zero tolerance level? An AI that is 99.9% of the time correct on task I would imagine would be better than most people at that task.
RelatablePanic
What evidence do you have to suggest that it won’t pass that threshold? The “average skilled” mathematician is quickly being outpaced by this tech.

Sounds super conceited but having a relationship with a beautiful woman. Don’t think I’ll have ever have the salary or looks to be in a relationship with women like that.
RelatablePanic
Is it worth it? Maybe. People may still have a preference for human accountants or you may have a position where you are more advisory then actually crunching numbers.
Is it a bit more of a gamble of a career choice? Probably yea, imo. AI is showing itself to be exceedingly good at math, like pHD level solving century old problems good. It basically just wiped out mathematicians as a career. I can’t imagine navigating tax codes or at least basic tax filling is too far off.

Yea I’m about to turn 28 and yea I’d say about 25. You realize most of your real true youth is behind you and a new chapter is beginning.
Isn’t this literally the plot of a South Park episode?
