Think of it like a teacher writing notes on a whiteboard.
There’s one whiteboard. 30 students each copy the notes into their own notebook. The teacher doesn’t need 30 whiteboards, and the copies don’t take up any room on the whiteboard. Each copy takes up space in that student’s notebook.
Downloading a game is the same thing:
[ Steam server ]
one 100 GB original
/ | \
/ | \
[Your PC] [My PC] [Some guy's PC]
100 GB 100 GB 100 GB
The server isn’t storing a million copies waiting to be handed out. It’s reading the same original file over and over and sending that data down the wire. The “copy” only gets created as it arrives on your hard drive, which is why you need 100 GB free, not them.
So they can’t run out, the same way a teacher can’t “run out” of whiteboard by letting more students copy it down. The real limit is how fast they can send it to everyone at once (bandwidth). That’s why big releases sometimes have slow downloads, but nobody ever gets told the game is “sold out.”

No, desktop client only at the moment. No plans at the moment for mobile.

Then what is the right way?
- There's potentially no "right" way, but the community seems to be overwhelming clear when it comes to private servers for Ragnarok, at least. The most populated ones are pre-renewal. With little to no P2W. And fun cosmetics. Of course, unfortunately, the most popular ones start to drift in to what Gravity does because money corrupts.
What IS Ragnarok Online?
- Depends who you ask.
Does having mobile compatibilty make it garbage?
- I would say yes, but that's personal to me. A lot of people like mobile because they may not have a computer to play on. But I think mobile inherently is not Ragnarok Online. It might be a fork of RO, but it is not RO.
Is it the auto functions that's the problem?
- it might not be THE problem but it's a HUGE problem. Original Ragnarok Online never had any automatic features. In fact original RO had quite possibly the most opposite to auto anything out of any MMO ever. Everything was incredibly manual. If you wanted to teleport to another map, you would have to talk to acolytes and priests and hope they had a warp there. And then you probably had to pay them for the BGem at least. Usually 1000z for a warp. You would have to walk absolutely everywhere. Vending and selling items was absolutely manual. Want to set up a shop? Make an entire new character for the specific purpose of doing so. Want to have a quest onboard you to the game? Hell no, just drop you in to the world and off you go! More and more and more of these examples exists.
Is it the graphics being changed to 3d a problem?
- I don't necessarily think it's a problem. I think people have a lot of nostalgia for the 2D sprites. And I think there's value in that. Being 2D sprites make them age incredibly well. The sprites are pure art that doesn't need to be upscaled or run in 4K or anything like that. They are gorgeous and beautiful and timeless. Now that isn't to say 3D variant cannot work. But if it wants to be Ragnarok Online, it needs to hold itself as close as possible to the original game. Personally, I think that RO3 actually does a pretty good job of this artistically. Everything I've seen really does look like a modern interpretation of the world. There might be some changes I would make, simple things like the Acolyte sit animation being different, I wish it was like the 2D sit animation. Things like that. But I think it can still work.
Obviously p2w is bad, so then what is good monetization?
- Subscription based monetisation will always be the best monetisation, but fans don't like it. So it rarely happens. This is possibly what made World of Warcraft and FFXIV last as long as they have. They have less of an incentive to sell P2W items to guarantee they make money. But then look at GW2, it's a one time box price with no subscription and it does well also. Of course they sell cosmetics. Which can work for RO, there are plenty of cosmetic options. They just need to ensure they are never selling items with real game changing stats, which is where they went wrong.
Then theres the whole classic vs renewal issue.
- I personally think renewal ruined a lot of what made Ragnarok good. Ultimately I feel that Renewal pulled all the classes to be clones of each other. All the classes were able to solo everything. They all got huge AOE attacks that work on all mobs, even Priests can now clear screens of mobs. It made every single class feel the same. Then there are the incredibly long quest lines that just have you talking to NPCs over and over and over again for no damn reason. Renewal could have been good if they kept the class identity and didn't try to make every single class a class you can solo on. You should always try to keep the focus on party play and keep each class having its own niche.
People have to live their lives too. Gone are the days where your money gets you far. Now, you grind your hours at work just to put food on the table.
- Well, no. You just got older. YOU have to work and put food on the table. But you didn't have to when you were a kid playing games. The balance of a game should always start at the top, with the hardcore player in mind, and then trickle down to the more casual players. The moment you lose the hardcore players, the casual players follow, and then you have a dead game.
Some personal opinions i have: the previous market of player vends is gone.
- I do mostly agree with this. Especially the larger a server gets. Personally, on my server, there is an Auction House. Merchant classes automatically get given the Vending skill and it only has 1 level. Using the vending skill lets you open the Auction House anywhere you are, rather than going to the NPC. You can list up to 20 items. Any class can list items. When you list an item as a merchant class, a clone of your gets placed in the vending lanes in Prontera with a shop above its head leading to the Auction House and its items. The shop owner can customise the name of the shop, so there's still the feeling of merchants with custom shops and being able to advertise their items. This is a good mix of the two ideas, I feel.

even with pre-loading, it is often the case there is a patch on day one when it officially releases.
obviously no where near as big an issue as downloading the entire game, but with how many copies this game is going to sell, I wouldn't be surprised if we see some issues.
there have been some steam releases that have caused steam to crash at times. imagine if gta6 actually was releasing day 1 on steam...
Reynbou
It's not exactly the same thing, but the PSP basically did have this with the UMD.
Reynbou
Yeah that's an opinion. I'm definitely going to stick with dark mode. It's a differentiator.
Reynbou
What on earth are you talking about?
You cannot pretend that watching a horror movie is the same as exposing your life to the public for weeks or months on TV to an entire nation. Your logic is MASSIVELY flawed if you truly think that.
You're LARPing autism and taking it too far.
Reynbou
No, but there are very clearly different levels to that. Pretending your autism means you cannot tell the difference is just a lie.
Reynbou
I think it takes a lot of courage to submit yourself to 24x7 cameras and recordings for the whole country and world to see everything you do while in there. That alone is enough.
Reynbou
honestly it feels perfect for it, with all the classes and skills that already exists. kinda fit naturally
Reynbou
I have no intentions to make it viable from a browser, no. Standalone client.
Reynbou
Oh I do already have that. Though to be fair it likely needs some work.
But the interesting thing is, no one uses it. When you load in the game for the first time it asks you which theme you want to use. Everyone chooses the dark theme.
Reynbou
apologies if it came across that way, truly didn't mean it
I honestly just don't understand the point of doing it. more power to anyone wanting it though
Reynbou
sorry but no, it is not, since it has built in multiplayer
Reynbou
that looks somewhat interesting, hopefully something like this takes off
the name doesn't make a lot of sense to me to be fair
nexusmods makes sense, it's a place for mods
quiver launcher sounds like yet another game launcher app, which instantly turns me off
Reynbou
hmmm maybe... I find the home page confusing to be honest
without already knowing what the website is for, it's exceptionally unclear as to what it is
to be honest I still don't know what the website is
Reynbou
Nah
Reynbou
Okay who's going to be the first one to make the "nexusmods" of these native PC ports
Reynbou
The loud people on either side of politics are the minority either way.
The large majority of people are like this.
Reynbou
there's a link on my profile and the youtube video in the post
Reynbou
thanks for this, I decided to be a pass over the UI to unify it all a bit and clean things up
I actually noticed I'd made some things slightly different to others and it was getting a bit disorganised, so hopefully it's actually a bit more cleaned up now :)
Reynbou
Oh I see. Then read my first sentence again.
Reynbou
I mean, yeah kinda... If we really want to be objective about it.
Punisher absolutely is not a hero at the very least.

I never really had much interest in the Doram class. Thought it was a huge gimick tbh. Maybe if the race was more than just a single class it could have been interesting.
The Druid is cool though. But I do wish it was a standard class, rather than an expanded class.
I ended up back porting it in to my pre-renewal server with a huge balance overhaul to make it appropriate for pre-renewal content.
It's fun enough but a bit generic.
