tl:dr: It's to match the "realistic" feel the rest of the game has.

The objective of the game is to follow one of 5 different factions' storyline in their response to the second, more direct assault, alien invasion. Each of these 5 different stories are more like different starting points, and there's going to be a good amount of overlap between them, largely because creating 5 entirely unique stories would make this take far too long to develop.

You do this as a mech pilot, being able to build your mech from various different swappable parts (chassis, cockpit, reactors, weapons, etc.) and each part has different components that can change aspects of it's part. The main way you get new parts is by scanning enough salvaged parts from defeated mechs, bringing those scans to a researcher to obtain schematics, which you can then manufacture. The player has to think about things like ammo weight in their cargo bay, how much ammo they bring when they go out, what kind of weapons they're using against different opponent types, etc. There are non-viable builds, but this is a save/load system so they're not screwed if they die.

Along the way they can get companions in the form of other mech pilots, salvage trucks to help them carry more things to let them explore more, and squads of on-foot soldiers to back them up.

Everything on the human side is grounded in hard speculative fiction, whereas the alien side is the more fantasy aspect (time warping fields, gravity wells, teleportation) which, in time, the player can gain access to.

The human side being grounded is a big part of the reason I want towns to feel lived in, like real populations that sprung into existence for a reason and not because "the player needs a mech hanger to interact with." The target market for this game is me, but at the same time, I am trying to think about how others would play the game. I feel like most players would see most of the town as backdrop, and honestly that's what it is. I'm not trying to simulate every person and give everyone a specific job - the player will only be able to interact with a handful of people, and there's only going to be a small number of people ever seen moving around just to make the game "feel" alive, otherwise the game would come out in 2050.

Ignore me if I'm talking out of my ass, I'm new to contracting, but it seems like job costing/detailed estimation would be a big help here. More than once I've been like "this should take a week and shouldn't cost too much" and a month later I'm just sitting there annoyed at past me.

Maybe this is because I'm a programmer, but I feel like the odd man out here. I pretty much exclusively use sonnet 5 and have no issues.

RklsImmersion

Ugh, me too... It feels weird to do, but God damn it with the job market where it's at

RklsImmersion

I mean sure, but saying that doesn't really help anything. Regardless if there is a logical justification to feel the way they are feeling, the feelings still exists. Yeah, it is an example of AI psychosis, but berating them doesn't help in any way, so if you're only looking to hurt I guess continue, but that does make you a dick head.

This is like a manager at a construction site saying he did all the hard work of telling the people what to do, and the people are just tools that did stuff.

RklsImmersion

It appears that your shit's all fucked

RklsImmersion

It's still irritates me that stupidity killed what we could have had

RklsImmersion

I don't really get the fable hype. Compared to opus 4.8, I'm not really getting better responses

I happened across this post because I was looking for exactly that, and of course the link is dead and I couldn't find it on the site. It is on wayback though, so for anyone else who needs it, here it is.

We had two people pay $10 each for our game, and it's just a playtest right now. People probably like your game!

I remember on Twitter the creator of some JavaScript framework posted an image of a job listing that required 5 years of experience in that JavaScript, and he said apparently he's not qualified because he only created it two years ago

RklsImmersion

I've seen a few that were only a single run, and as long as there is a significant failure and it's well documented, the &RR even says not to penalize if there's only a single run. It was just the rotten cherry on top of an already fermented cake for me

RklsImmersion

Yeah, I initially planned on redoing it, but really looking at it I would have had to completely redo everything other than the use case, and at the top it says to just mark it as bad and move on if it needs a full rewrite.

RklsImmersion

I did think about that later, like maybe they have some of these that look fine if you scan through it, but are actually whack af, just to make sure people are actually reading through them and doing their job.

I feel like it has to either be that, someone giving their account to someone wholly unqualified, maybe a plant to make sure the reviewer is paying attention, or, you know, a cosmic mistake. I had to take a break after doing that one to let my brain recover.

Another team member here on the game he's talking about, if you want to join our discord server to learn more about it, you can do so here https://discord.gg/Zbqk92CHBc

I've been working with them since June 2024 off and on and I've made $27,000 so far. I could find out how many hours I put in it because I do track all of it, but I'd say roughly 800 hours or so

RklsImmersion

I mean sure, but they did explicitly say in one of the comments that they switched between their home Wi-Fi and Cafe Wi-Fi. Seems like that's the pretty obvious reason

RklsImmersion

I mean not you specifically, but there was someone on here the other day complaining about someone submitting a single turn on a multi-turn project

RklsImmersion

I think I read an r&r bitching about you

RklsImmersion

At this point I've probably put several hundred hours into DA, but I know I've lost dozens from stuff like this, or worse just on a long project and the power just cuts and everything vanishes.

RklsImmersion

I think it's cool that there was stuff there, even if that stuff isn't something that's useful to the gameplay.
