Its because of AI. They are spending lots of money of data centers, which will take a long time to pay off. They don't have the money, so they are cutting wages.

Ita because of AI, but not the reason everyone thinks.

Robot_Apocalypse

Your coding agent is skipping critical path precautions?!?!

Mine is fucking thinknig up the most randomly unlikely possible scenarios into some kind of psycopathic rube-goldburg machine of cascading unlikelihoods and wtiting fallback code and a billion tests for each one.

I swear 50% of my code exists to cover things that will NEVER happen, and the other 50% is test on this 50%.

I'm lucky if 1% of my code exists to actually do what the software exists to do.

At least i'll be safe from the coming cybergeddon. There is NO chance my software has a vulnerability.

What are your motivations for studying? What are the consequnces for poor performance? Why is performig highly important to you?

Has your answer to these questions changed over time?

How old are you? What do you value? Are you developing social skills as well as academic skills?

Why does your change in performance matter to you?

Qre yiu getting enough rest? How about ubstructured time where you can follow your interests? What about boredom, where your brain can wander and wonder?

Do you have hobbies? Do you plqy sport, or are tiu learning an instrument?

Yiur goal is to live a fulfilling life. That means it should be well rounded, with plenty of time for play and exploration, along side academic development and responsibilities.

Robot_Apocalypse

No, it's not good for the 99.999% because what its presenting isn't accurate.

The progress is significant enough without having to present it incorrectly like this video does.

This is important, so accuracy matters.

At the moment this video is just hyperbole

Robot_Apocalypse

Oh man, the excessively dramatic voiceover has made this unbearable to watch for me.

Also, while I generally agree with the premise of the video, it is SO uncritical of the progress, and lacks any recognition of the fact that the progress is not as idealised as its presented, but instead presents them in the most fawning and excessively over-the-top way, that it just comes across as a puff piece without any intellectual rigor.

Robot_Apocalypse

This is a really good explanation!

I'm not sure if ita true, but ifnit is true, its a GREAT wau to explaon tje difference to someone who knows object oriented programming.

Robot_Apocalypse

But I mean, at what hierarchy of abstraction do you draw the line between 'new' vs 'existing'?

Is discovering a new relationship between two existing ideas, not new?

Isnt everything arguably a new relationship between two existing things? Everything has to have a relationship to something else. Otherwise it has no relationship to our reality.

Innovation is iterative. I think the idea that expansion is pure greenfield discoveries, vs incremental improvement is false.

Robot_Apocalypse

Wow, this is an ambitious goal. I don't know enough to know if the hypothesis you're trying to test is even testable, but I suspect it is HARD as it would seem to me that there are MANY MANY variables that might influence the results.

As a first step, I would try and break-down the hypothesis you are testing into smaller units. Much smaller units.

Make a list of each of the individual hypothesis and explore them each individually. Thats a start.

Robot_Apocalypse

The blog could do with a table of contents, and then the use a few more charts and tables to compare things quantitatively. Honestly I couldn't read it. Too many ads.

Robot_Apocalypse

Might be a stupid question, but when you are comparing OCR and VLM, what specific predictions/values/measures are you comparing?

Also, I tend to think of performance across specific document types. So invoices, manuals, etc, and will possibly look to fine tune for my specific use case first. What kind of dataset are you working with?

Robot_Apocalypse

What i find hard here is that there isnt acknowledgement of how individuals have largely chosen this outcome. Especially today when we are not ignorant of the harms.

Yes blame the technology, and yes blame the corporations who are pushing the technology, and yes blame the governments who arent setting standards that keep their citizens safe.

However, i also would like to see culture and norms push back at an indivdual level where we start to expect more from ourselves and each other.

Much like a drug addict can't be helped until they are ready to help themselves. I think pushing the buck to governments and expecting them to fix the situation, in the ABSENCE of a change in individual culture, is not going to do anything.

I am NOT blaming individuals. I instead want to acknowledge that individual action needs to be a PART of the solution. Not all. Or only.

Much like climate change. Corporations are polluting our waters, and our air, and our food supply, but things wont change until people are prepared to do something about it.

Finally, I would argue corporations and governments ARE people. To other them and then ONLY put the blame on THEM and not acknolwledge the role of the individual, is part of the problem.

I know there are some individuals who have more power, and are causing nore harm, and yes, lets target them to syop the harm they are doing, but we are ALL much more powerful than we think.

We HAVE the power. YOU have the power. You CAN make a difference.

Use your voice and actions and influence to change whats happening around you. Participate in the conversation. Create the conversation. Get to know you local member of government. Make sure they know you by name. Make you cause clear. Learn how to build support and infkuence people with facts data and emotion.

Our world IS strugglling. We ARE suffering. Young people DO deserve more.

If not now. Then WHEN?!?!

Robot_Apocalypse

I have built and trained many different architectures, perhaps a third of these listed here, and I see nothing in these diagrams that is relevant or useful.

Maybe its just me.

Robot_Apocalypse

Ah. Is it just me, or does this show nothing of the actual meaningful difference between the architectures?

I mean, how does this drawing show a convolutional neural network? How would anyone looking at this understand what a covolution is?

Robot_Apocalypse

Seems to me what they are demonstrating is an in-lab high speed computer vision to 3D space to robot movement pipeline.

Robot_Apocalypse

A unit vector?

Robot_Apocalypse

Ooohhh, this is a tough one.

One could argue unreasonable clients don't make money.

And good employees might be very expensive to replace.

It might come down to which is harder to find for you, good employees or good clients.

You may just have to do the math. What is your customer acquisition cost, and your employee hiring and training cost?

Knowing thise things might make the decision making more data driven

Robot_Apocalypse

I mean, you might say it has doubled or trippled or its grown 5x or x orders of magnitude, but hundreds of percent just seems very strange to me. Particularly as the units are not in percentages.

Robot_Apocalypse

Um, DOES the chart show relative growth of hundreds of percent?

I see a scale that is measured in USD. I dont sww growth expressed as a percentage anywhere.

Is this thread just AI hallucinating stuff?

Fucken hell.

Robot_Apocalypse

Ahhh, the scale goes from 500 billion at it's lowest, up to 4 billion?

I am surprised Our World in Data would make this kinda mistake.

Makes me sus about this whole post.

Robot_Apocalypse

93.5 out of 1000 is crazy? Its roughly 10%. Or did you interpret the graph as 93%?

The graph is confusing.

Robot_Apocalypse

I am confused, is this a probability if dying like the subheading says, or is it a rate?

Or is it neither?

You refrence percentages in your title, which would cause the reader to think your graph is in percentages, but its not.

Also, your y axis maximum being at 100, is a slightly confusing choice for both probability and rate, as it can be inferred to be it's special meaning of 100%

Also, it is intentionally skewing the percieved performance.

If you measure is per 1000 births then, arguably your axis should go to 100 to shiw the true proportional change.

Or, you could go with percentage.

As it is now, it is unnecessarily confusing.

Robot_Apocalypse

Who the hell has time to read pages and pages of a strangers rambling thoughts.

At best this is human written, at worst its just AI junk that hasnt had any thought put into it.

I WISH i had this much time to waste on a post.

Robot_Apocalypse

This is thought provoking.

The primary thought is "what the fuck is this graph trying to show me?"

And "why arent they just using two graphs?"

Clear communication is good communication.

Robot_Apocalypse

What the fuck is going on in these comments?!

Robot_Apocalypse

sigh my point is, its not a problem.

I was asking if you could come up with a scenario where its a problem.

I used the word 'harm'and i dint want you to interpret it as 'injury', but harm in the 'legal' use of the word sinply means that someone was impactted negatively.

I didnt mention legal damages.

Point is you can't identify a zcenario where this is acyually a problem.

Unless your trying to cheat.

Fuck-head.

I am enjoying your comments though. Gives me something to do while sitting on the toilet. So please keep them coming.
