I don’t think the death penalty really deters people from committing the sort of crimes that the death penalty is applied to. I suspect it would be a different story if we applied it to government corruption or financial crimes.

Most people will probably tell you that they think that torture is wrong but an awful lot of them actually think it’s great if they can justify it.
