I believe an emotionally mature person is able to not let the personal character of the author negatively affect their experience with the work.

That's the part that I fundamentally disagree with. Saying that says that a particular way of deciding whether you enjoy art is a requirement for maturity. Whether someone likes a particular piece of media or not is so hugely irrelevant to morality and emotional intelligence that drawing a line between the patterns in what they like and maturity seems absolutely absurd to me.

SemperSpectaris

Not quite. I agree entirely that that is a good sign of emotional maturity. We just disagree on what is relevant when it comes to listening to music. I think what is relevant is whether the listener enjoys it, no matter what the source of that enjoyment or lack of enjoyment is. You think what is relevant is whether they would enjoy it if they follow some preset list of what's allowed to affect their enjoyment.

SemperSpectaris

Whether you can listen to music by a horrible person without thinking about how horrible they are is a personal idiosyncrasy, with no more moral or maturity component to it than whether you can enjoy classical music. Claiming that enjoying or not enjoying any particular piece of media is a requirement for "maturity" is the domain of insecure fools.

SemperSpectaris

You're not more "mature" because you have different personal preferences in music. Get over yourself.

I understand the goals of your post. It's to smugly tut-tut people for possibly blaming the wrong organization for the deaths of 6 children. But you miss my point, which is that even if the IDF didn't kill those specific 6 children, within 3 days they had killed 6 other children, and then they would kill 51 more many times over by the end of the conflict. So at this point, why does it matter? We're supposed to be shocked that people believed the IDF did something that they verifiably did do just a few days later? It's obviously nitpicking the single (again, possibly) invalid accusation and ignoring the totally valid, equivalent ones sitting right next to it.

SemperSpectaris

You are calling it blood libel and fake news and demanding retractions. You are 100% acting like it's definitively resolved.

And to be clear, if you are saying there is not systematic inconsistency, your argument here amounts to righteous indignation that the IDF was blamed for killing 63 children when they in fact only killed 57.

SemperSpectaris

Why do you claim that it's consistent with the UN report when your linked UN PDF has this line in it?

256 Palestinians, including 66 children and 40 women were killed, of whom 128 were believed to be civilians. Around 245, including 63 children, were seemingly killed by Israeli Defense Forces.

The only evidence you've presented here for the Beit Hanoun explosion not being IDF is a preliminary report from an organization that is associated with the IDF. Seems like weak evidence to declare the question definitively resolved.

It wouldn't be only comparing the fine to the profits. The company's decision-making would be based on the expected value of the fine, so multiply the fine by the percentage chance of getting caught.

SemperSpectaris

Apparently. Although saying that 1/7th of the U.S. doesn't get medical care doesn't seem like the best way to find the money.

SemperSpectaris

This is the source of the 300 billion number

UN scientists says 300 billion could halt emissions increases for 15-20 years. No, it's not "solving" it, but that is a big deal.

Open Borders isn't quite a utopia switch, but it's pretty close.

My point is that you're not being honest about your views here. You're clearly trying to reframe what you actually believe in order to make it more popular, only retreating to your true position when someone engages.

This is what started your snit:

Imagine being a fan of Joe Manchin, fucking disgusting

A small insult towards people who like Manchin. But you know you can't claim that every insult of that type is unacceptable that without looking like a whiny fool, so it needs to be something more important. No, now this person is "turning Manchin into a villain". And even though you actually think that

Every democrat in America should be kissing that mans feet

you're now just calling for people to be "accommodating".

You consistently turn your opponents views into caricatures, while pretending your own standards are far less demanding than they actually are. It's fucking exhausting.

SemperSpectaris

Every democrat in America should be kissing that mans feet

Have some courage in your convictions. You clearly don't think the actual problem is only that people aren't "accommodating" to Machin. And yet that's how you described it here.

SemperSpectaris

Nope, sorry. I found a blog post saying that the way it uses "Crusade" and "Jihad" interchangeably is problematic and dated. That means it has been officially canceled, all discussion of it is verboten, and there would absolutely never be a $165 million movie version of it coming out in October. This is why we can't have nice things. The wokes ruined it.

SemperSpectaris

I’ll say it again. You couldn’t make Dune anymore. No studio would ever risk such a thing. Because of the inevitable woke backlash.

SemperSpectaris

Yeah, these days we only have safe, inoffensive shows like Rick and Morty and South Park.

SemperSpectaris

I’d like to interject for a moment. What you are referring to as the Linux community, is in fact, the GNU/Linux community.

Counterpoint: 280 characters was a 2017 update.

Give the invading army citizenship. They are now an American army. Checkmate. Open Borders always wins.

SemperSpectaris

Your ignorance of the topic is tripping you up on some of these.

"White standard English" is referring to what is labeled on your wikipedia page as "American English", but specifically excluding African-American English. African-American English, especially African-American Vernacular English, is commonly viewed as more "unprofessional" compared to other dialects.

Straightened hair in this context means chemically straightened Black hair, as opposed to natural Black hair. Afros, dreads, or braids are sometimes considered unprofessional in the workplace or even banned.

SemperSpectaris

They take Ubers, not limos.

Don't pin this nonsense on leftists. This is studio execs being just as terrible as they always are. They'd be just as capable of doing this with centrist politics as left ones.

Correct.
