When I was a kid, a friend of my dad's died. They told me that it was because he was in the garage with the car running for too long. So for a while I lived in pure terror of the garage. I'd hold my breath every time we pulled in, and when my dad was out there working I'd check on him constantly to make sure the car was off. Eventually I got over that and forgot all about it, and then a couple years ago it popped into my head and I realized my dad's friend had killed himself, and my parents, not knowing how to discuss that with me, had given me a terrible fear of cars in garages for most of my adolescence.
