As a support caster, think about battlefield control spells and save-or-suck spells (have a variety to target different saves - i.e. Blind/Deaf targets Con, good for squishy non-casters)

Dodge tanks are an integral part of Unicorn Overlord. Not a JRPG but still.

The only problem with the Geomancers is that, because their attacks were keyed off the terrain they were currently standing in, they were often dealing damage types that the enemies were resistant to or even absorbed. I.e. doing water damage to fish in an early FF game was not ideal.

Other than that, I agree they were a fun class.

There isn't. That's the whole point. Medicine used to be insanely sexist and discriminatory. Now it's just regular amounts of sexist and discriminatory (still a lot) with some pockets of still really bad.

I would probably rule they need to do a Nature/Wis check to actually shift while in the field, but if they are in a different shape they won't be booted out of it. Can revert to human without a check as well.

I made an NPC mage-hunter monk once. Shadow monk, mage slayer, eventually Sentinel.

Usually go first with high Dex. Shadow step past all the meat shields. Cast darkess to take away caster line of sight, but I can still see them to get an AOO if they try to run. With Sentinel even if they disengage they trigger. Misty Step and similar are short range, and I can bring my darkness with me.

Turn 2, 4 hits Flurry + stunning Strike. How is your con save, squishy one?

Very annoying and very effective. Party wizard did not like me. Fun times.

Between having to switch gear and skills, and the fact that equipped skills mean any given character can be fairly flexible without much change, I locked into a party and didn't change it much.

Later on when I got a new character of a "type" I would swap them in for a while (i.e. new Merchant replaces previous one). If I like them they stay in, if not I roll back to previous.

The only one I completely skipped was the singer you find on the island. Both because I liked Soairse and because he was annoying.

Game Designer 1: "How long do you think we should make the section that tells the Gamemaster how to run a game, adjucate abilities, make it fun and fresh for their people?"

Game Designer 2: "That's a lot of very complex topics.....at least 10 whole pages!!"

Project Manager: "Make it 8. We gotta ship this thing!!!"

Game Designer 1: <BREAK> 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

"Alright. Who wants to be the designated Main Character for this campaign? Michelle? You sure? If you miss a session we can't play. Loooot of responsibility."

First rule: must have 1 DM and 8 PCs. No more, no less.

Second rule: Good luck scheduling!!

I truly don't get why it matters? Is it going to break the game? Them just let them do it for flavor. Have fun.

If at some point it actually matters to you or the story (i.e. a planned ambush) you can do "though you are normally cautious, you weren't able to predict THIS kind of scenario. You don't gain Dodge benefits until you take that action on your turn because you need to adjust your tactics. Roll initiative!"

Shrekdaly

This. It is both Lu Tze at his best and Susan at her best or second best (Hogfather).

Shrekdaly

Not a specific character but a class in FFXII - white mage. (Zodiac Age edition) Item based healing can work for a while, but you need real AOE healing towards the end of the game.

Shrekdaly

I think I might have seen him in Pitch Perfect, too. Not sure, he looked much younger.

Shrekdaly

Agree with most others that this wouldn't take a roll.

That said, for this specific scenario, I would give the PCs an opportunity to somehow learn about the existence of this secret language so that they can avoid the situation or find another option.

Doing something without a roll because there is no other way it can go: fine

Having the PCs make a choice putting them into that situation without any opportunity to learn what the consequences might be: less fun

I really like these. Great suggestions! Like a conspiracy theorist, does-too-much-youtube-"research" type in a fantasy setting. Very fub

This. A lot of people's self worth can be tird to their job and losing a job can cause or exacerbate depression in peoe with depressive tendencies. And yes, it can go undiagnosed for years.

And for those saying "well that's her job to get help." Yes, it is. But as a partner you can support that. And sometimes that means helping the person recognize it in the first place, as it can be hard to identify while you're going through it. Marriage isn't a "you" and "me" it's an "us."

NAH but please try to have a conversation and see if there's anything deeper going on.

There is an entire TV Tropes page with examples too, if you want to see it. Named after the example you used, no less.

Agree. Early game where I can possibly get a kill or get an entire pod within range of a one shot kill, are the only times I'll break concealment with a grenade. Otherwise I'll take a strong shot, see where they scatter, then plan from there.

The only exception late game is when I can geta reaper claymore and explode with a greanade. Getting 5-9 damage across 3-4 bodies is worth it.

I would add 1 other role to this: breaker. Even if they aren't doing insane damage, somone that can consistently remove 3-5 shield each turn across a wide variety of weapons and elements. Subjobs help a lot with this. Osvald is very good as he can get 3x most elemental weaknesses without much setup. Weaponmaster is also great for this.

Getting a "restore SP" dance partner for Agnea is great early because Lion Dance can bump offense and quickly restore 30-50 sp. Also if Agnea is a weapon master, dagger dance counts as a dance so you can spam it for effectively 0 sp. Great for mobs.

I started reading them as ebooks before I ever saw the physical books, then I was very glad I had. I love reading physical books as much as the next person, but the SL books are so big as to be unmanageable. I vote e-reader.

Just ask before you roll - "If this roll does not succeed, would you like to use any abilities to have me reroll it or change it?"

If yes, roll twice no matter what and mark off whether or not they used a charge of what ability.

If they use that ability again before a LR or SR, ask how many charges they have. If you secretly used one or more to bring that to 0, let them know then that they are out of charges.

If there were multiple secret rolls, they won't know which failed (though they can play up some "bad feeling" that they made a mostake in judgement zomewhere). If there was only one such roll, then they can figure it out, but hopefully not until after the fact.

I agree with some others the Mistborn is a better starting point. It picks up much quicker.

WoK is my least favorite Stormlight book. It's like a thousand page prequel chapter. And other than like the first 2-3 and last 2-3 chapers, I think you could almost skip the entire book and not even miss it. Sure if you're a lore aficionado, it's there. But every plot point gets re-explained in more detail or made irrelevant in later books. Just 1000 pages of shaggy dog story.

The series overall I loved. Considering doing a reread and skipping WoK honestly. Even onowing what all the mysteries are setting up, I'm finding it really hard to get through again.
