I don’t know what the official film-school term for it would be, but one of my favorite aspects of the movie is that extreme close-up of young Henry’s eyes as he watches the glamorous gangsters out tye window. I’ve always read that as Scorsese basically telling us how to watch the movie: this is a memory filtered through a kid’s eyes. Later the vibe takes a drastic change, but I’d probably describe a lot of the first half’s creative shot ideas as ‘romanticized memory’ and in the case of your gangster introduction scene ‘romanticized narration’ or ‘romanticized POV’. It’s not far from the cliche rom com shot where a guy sees the pretty girl for the first time and suddenly she’s in slow motion, perfectly rimmed by golden light, and “Dream Weaver” starts playing. Even the famous Copacabana one-shot feels like it’s not just that it’s a one-shot that makes it special. It’s that everything is magically choreographed and too perfect to be reality, but it’s perfect for communicating how that world felt to Henry.

I’m curious if this image comes from a film. I like green tint that reminds me of the way old fluorescent lights used to look

I filed a claim 🤞

It’s at the shop so I can’t take new photos but here’s another angle, so maybe you can tell

It’s actually not applicable. This thing keeps a focal point locked in relation to the base, while allowing some movement in the connecting pieces between them. If you were to shake the base of this, the focal point would shake too. It would essentially be a worse version of a tripod

I recently got a quick call to take my four-year-old to transitional kindergarten. Your list is exactly what I got. The Yeti seat, the Clubhouse Mini in my case, the wheel covers, and finally, I caved and bought the hauler rack when I couldn't find a cheaper option that I liked as much. I can't say I regret it. Now I'm just filling out some details. I got a little bracket thing to hold my U-lock. And a cheap pouch to put on the handlebar neck to throw my phone into for easy access. Oh, and I got a rearview mirror for my helmet — I never felt I needed one before, but it’s working out well. I'm curious if there's anything else I should get — maybe something to increase our visibility?

Shut off power to this outlet at the circuit breaker before you unscrew anything.

I believe that’s incorrect. It sounds like you’re quoting the 2000 Denver study, but they say the 6x cancer zone is 750 feet, not one mile.

And that’s Ryan Hurst sitting between them. Love that dude.

There’s an interesting example in the Philip Seymour Hoffman movie Jack Goes Boating. It’s practically the first scene in the movie. I think it might’ve been Hoffman‘s directorial debut, and in the scene, he arranged the blocking of characters in different cars that are parked facing opposite directions, and it left him with a bit of a conundrum for how to place the camera for a correct shot / reverse shot scene. check it out and I think you’ll see what I mean. By shooting from the shotgun seat in both setups, he created shots that duplicated each other’s compositions and eye lines and therefore cut together perfectly wrong. I wouldn’t say it’s super confusing to the audience, but it’s weird to watch. The main reason I remember it is because I used to be a storyboard artist, and I’ve had to help directors figure out how to avoid painting themselves into these kinds of corners.

We reminded them that there was a layer of ash all over the neighborhood then posted this quote: “Ash is particularly toxic to young children, so we’re going to urge that young children not be touching any of this contaminated debris because it’s filled with lead asbestos,” said Barbara Ferrer, Los Angeles County Director of Public Health. “We’ve had meltdowns of lithium batteries. You think of your houses as being relatively safe and they are, but when they burn, there’s a lot of toxicity there.”

My wife watched that and we included some of that information in our appeal to the preschool. And it was successful. They are dumping and replacing all the sand.

Sickballs

Good info. I am online now looking for environmental consultants. The preschool Director seems open to testing, but I think it’ll only happen if we do the legwork. My assumption is that these pollutants are most concentrated on the surface and will over time dilute into the sand as the kids play on it so it feels like right now it’s as urgent as it’ll ever be. Agree?

Sickballs

Really appreciate your opinion. The grounds to this preschool are largely a sand field under swings and jungle gym stuff. Could you help me figure out the best thing a parent can do in terms of testing. What kind of company should I be looking for?

Sickballs

With schools reopening, including TK and preschools, does anybody know if things like sandboxes would be contaminated after being exposed this past week? Any advice on checking if they’re safe for kids to play in again?
