As someone who has developed VLMs for these companies.
You are mistaken. They are LLM architecture through and through, they just have a different dictionary.
SippieCup
thats a very niave viewpoint.
For example, LLM architecture is used for self driving cars in every major player's stack, removing all the convolutional models in general.
its just not doing things in the english language. or in ay language. tokens are simply actions/visual identities.
Does that mean VLMs are unable to drive cars? because they are simply glorified driving autocomplete? coz there are millions on the road right now.

That’s like saying crispter and rna vaccines haven’t done anything yet for the 15 years they were around before covid.
And now that they were so effective covid has “this was never real” people coming through social media.
I don’t think llm’s are the final form, and honestly I think there are fundementals of it that are built wrong and are constrained by the architecture.
But to say they are worthless because they “havent done anything” is kinda dumb. ml models that discover cancer better than radiologists have been around for years, and are more efficient than llms.
LLMs are the next generation, and a huge stepping stone. Power intensive af, but they will build the next thing that is better and they will solve a lot of these real world issues even as a glorified autocomplete.

My sister in law is like that. Shes great and lives with us and I love it.
That said, there are some real curmudgeons in the community.
SippieCup
oh.. sorry if i wasn't clear. i 1000000000% agree.
my eye twitched when he did that, then I asked him why, and basically bet his job when I asked him to tell me the (simple) SQL query he would do to get the row.
obviously he was able to tell me how do do a
select * from table where id = 'something'
he just said that it was easier to read from the terminal than the dbeaver cells... Which, fair but still fuckin' stupid.
SippieCup
You skipped the titanium case phones which were the problem phones.l and why they silently went back to aluminum for the new pro.
SippieCup
the avride one was immediately followed by a clip of the robotaxi doing the same thing…
SippieCup
My Nov 8th order just shipped. Comes on friday and I'm gone for the weekend. :(
SippieCup
CC is pretty effing good at onshape now. Lotta people are just scared of the terminal.
SippieCup
I saw one of my developers today have CC select a single row from a table from its primary key. it took longer and more characters to write that query than to just do a sql query in dBeaver WHICH WAS OPEN RIGHT NEXT TO IT.
He prompted it on xHigh too, so he then waited for 40 seconds before telling me the answer.

programmers, then designers, now csuite, and soon the entire company.

The real answer is a combination of what others have already said, that they are the willing buyers, that it is a better long-term strategy for them.
Every watt of compute going to making better programmers means that when they start plateauing (or solve) programming, they can immediately turn around and shit out better versions of whatever tool they want to go after next with all that spare compute.
It's an arms race, If they are 10% faster to reach milestones than everyone else at programming, then they can make a a model that is 5% better than that 10% faster than anyone else. Its a compounding arms race. As soon as you go to do something else, the other guys will get better than you and produce a new model that can just get to where you are in a day and then surpass them and build it faster than them and they will always be behind.
Thats the real reason why the frontier companies want to stop the research and improvement, because they want to go and use the models they have (the best ones) to do exactly what you are asking. But if they do, Deepseek will be better than them in 3 months and will just do what Apple does and catch up and crush them at the other stuff in 6 months.
OpenAi is already trying to do that, which is why Anthropic is now wiping the floor with them. OpenAi spent time building a notion clone, which makes notion redundant for their team, when just 3 months ago they were talking about how great notion is for working with their team.
As soon as they stop getting returns from throwing compute at better programming models, you will see them start flooding every market with their implementations which will eventually outpace everyone else and win.
Shit like Salesforce, Harvey, the AI phone receptionists, Quickbooks, are already having or are about to have a real come-to-jesus moment.
Figma already had with artifacts/pages.
Adobe and Office apps with *craft.
Notion is going through it with spaces (except OAI was too early).
Right now these tools are distractions or they just let us commoners and small companies figure it out. Once they get to that plateau and target it, we're all out of business.
SippieCup
glm is near frontier. same with MiMo.
SippieCup
Jeez i think we are sharing the same dog…
SippieCup
sure

The new 1Pasword 8 flow is moving in that direction. but :linux: so not all apps pop it up the same way.

2 things:
better bluetooth audio switching from speakers/desk mic when they disconnect and reconnect. maybe thats just my environment though. Getting good BT audio/mic while using bt headphones was crap until the newest bt6 drivers. so at least I have that now.
A decent text messaging integration, like imessage on macOS. its the only thing i really miss.
SippieCup
only issue I have with 1Password is electron apps that open the logins in thier own browser window. im pretty sure i can fix that but too lazy too..
SippieCup
wireguard works fine for me. you do need to install libreswan instead of openswan instead though.
SippieCup
gridcraft and wordcraft have worked pretty well for me so far. but i havent done anything too crazy with it. much better experience than libreoffice.
SippieCup
I checked out in under a minute after launch from the e-commerce store. November 2nd-9th.
No idea how anyone could have ordered it sooner than me, but yeah, it would be cool if it just showed up on Monday. Lol
SippieCup
also goes to show how good Mac CPUs really are...
SippieCup
Sillicon valley episode 1 vibes.
SippieCup
yes. and it has a handy switch between the two in the app with a signle click without signing in again. cswap also works well switching between sessions on CLI without needing to change context or the session, /rc does need to be reconnected though. i usually just have a tmux session on my desktop at work which has two claude rc running on both accounts so I can check it on my phone / remote sessions.
What it looks like online/app:

They also don't have self driving robotaxis...
my startup doesn't have much LLMs involved, but that doesn't mean Tesla, Waymo, and Zoox don't. In fact, its just as relevant as your comment!
