Attempt #2: How did the Hōjō clan unofficially take over the Kamakura Shogunate from the Minamoto clan? (self.AskHistorians)

Unironically, an Arkham-type game where you play as Penguin with all his umbrella mechanics, being able to call in goons and whatnot would be so great!

Best villain

Oh cool! And that's my bad for misreading, I thought your previous comment said Early Hojo, not Late Hojo. Yes, I'm aware some members of the Late Hojo survived for centuries, but the clan itself ceased to exist.

Sith__Pureblood

I'm not clear of the relation

Sith__Pureblood

Yes, Lula just won.

Sith__Pureblood

What FotS clan? And I haven't been able to find anything saying they survived.

Sith__Pureblood

Apparently they're known as Hojo, later Hojo, Go-Hojo, and maybe something else idr.

Sith__Pureblood

No idea what that is lol

Sith__Pureblood

Interesting, would be interesting if true. Everything I've seen says they're completely unrelated, and the latter names themselves after the former to honour them (like how there are six different Jin dynasties throughout Chinese history), probably also because they're both from the same area of Japan.

To say as I said on this post on the TW subreddit:

Interesting to see them expand the map East where it's mostly ocean and a Japan that was mostly native Jōmōn people, while the early Japanese were still relatively new and have only established on like less than half of "Japan".

Would've rather they focused west to Tibet, more of SEA, and more of the Steppe. Those places were a lot more important to the geopolitics of China at that time than Japan was.

(that being said, I would be very happy to play the proto-Japanese at this point in history, such a fascinating time period that gets basically no coverage since it all goes towards Sengoku, Edo, and Imperial eras)

Certain times of the day on certain servers Isonzo is very active. Same with T and V.

LET'S FUCKING LOWWWWW!!

Wow thank you for such a grand answer and all the sources! Yeah it definitely seemed quite confusing at first but after rereading I think I have more of a handle on it (Japanese history isn't my forte compared to China). I can't believe the Minamoto clan barely lasted any time at all being the real power.

You said the main Minamoto line died out; does that mean a secondary Minamoto line ruled (as Hojo puppets) or did the Hojo (who had "Minamoto legitimacy" through Masako) rule the Shogunate and the Minamoto were properly gone?

Side note, as I read up more, I had no idea the Hojo of this time died out with the end of Kamakura and the later Sengoku-era Hojo were a different clan who took their name. Reminds me of the six or so "Jin" dynasties throughout China, for example.

As far as the GenAI goes: Rog, I'm sure you alone don't have the power to do anything about this, and I know it's mainly the execs pushing it, but I hope CA eventually comes to this realization.

We use AI tools where they help our craftspeople do their best work, as part of a continual evolution of how we use tools and technology in an evolving and competitive space. For me, the principle is pretty simple: AI can support the creator. It shouldn’t replace the creator. I don’t believe that AI can replace the human experience, judgement and creativity that awesome experiences come from. Can AI tools help with analysis, debugging, or speedy prototyping so our experts can focus on making incredible games?  Absolutely.

For the silly reasons of this subreddit's "no politics" rule, I can't get into the deep details on how all GenAI is anti-human devil tech, so I'll just mention it from an art perspective.

GenAI, even when used in the way you describe in the above paragraph, is detrimental to art and game development. In everything that takes work - be it art, science, mathematics, research, etc. - the often arduous process of making your way towards your intended goal sometimes helps produce positive results by mistake, something that wasn't even expected/ intended. Literally every. single. thing GenAI can do, a human can do equally as well and often better (even if sometimes longer). We've gone all of human history, and the history of videogames without it, so it's not necessary; and its inclusion has literally no examples of making the product it's used for any better (more often the opposite). I would really hope CA stops using GenAI altogether, not just for the final product.

Poor and even bad art/ results (of all kinds) is still better than slop "art"/ results.
