Same, earlier the app opened but some views were unavailable.
I'm in the Diamond tournament semifinals and I'm going to get booted out if I don't complete a lesson within a few hours.
https://www.duolingo.com/ is down too.

Smart kid!

Maybe someone who's never seen this type of sign before. Still doesn't really fit the sub.
SmLnine
You're right, I forgot about those.

You might want to read that sentence again.
(But yeah I didn't know about the post 2015 installations, thanks)

Yes. Very generally, non-turbine sources have some inertia (capacitors and inductors), but it's almost nothing compared to the inertial mass of the turbines.
SmLnine
"Batteries" (actually supercapacitors) can do this, but you have to specifically configure them to actually do it.
SmLnine
It can be. People can also be referring to birds when they talk about dinosaurs. But I've never heard either exception actually be the case in point outside of research projects.

I might have said steam turbine instead of turbine a few times. I hope I was able to get the point across: this has nothing to do with steam and everything to do with the inertial mass of the spinning turbine.

New Zealand's generation is roughly 60% hydro and 15% geothermal. Both use conventional spinning turbine-generators directly coupled to the grid, just like a coal plant. Therefore NZ won't have this problem.
Note that Steve said this problem is specific to PV and wind, which is correct.
I have a background in electrical engineering, and I'm not an expert on grid balance, but without getting super technical I'll say that Steve got the just of it completely right, he just mangled some terminology (not relevant to a general audience).
Basically, the following forms of grid level electricity generation typically involve large steam turbines:
Coal, g as, nuclear, hydro, geothermal, CSP (niche)
These forms don't:
Photovoltaic, wind, tidal
One large steam turbine has a few hundred tons of steel spinning inside it at about 3000 rpm. I'm sure you can imagine that quickly slowing down or speeding up those turbines needs a lot of energy (gigajoules). This ridiculous amount of momentum helps to keep the grid voltage and frequency stable.
Steam turbine based power gives you this stability "for free". Free as in its not usually included in basic $/kWh calculations. There are many ways to fix this for PV and wind as Steve mentioned, but his point was that it'll cost a bit extra. It's not much, but if you're comparing turbine based power vs non-turbine based, you have to include it at some point.

I hope you don't figure out where homeless people poop.
It's not good, but the parent posters are saying it's already extremely common and while ideally it shouldn't happen, one more occurrence is not going to change anything.

Halal in the streets, haram in the sheets.

Survival trumps morality.
Exactly, people will eat their pets and sick children in times of starvation.
But why bring it up in this context? Was this woman at the point of starvation?
SmLnine
Exactly. Like how you shouldn't trust a skinny chef.

This pattern will come to define the 2020s decade.

Their fertility rate is in the trash, along with the rest of the developed world. They're on 1.4. You need 2.1 to keep the population stable. Assuming the fertility rate will remain stable, and they want a stable population, they're going to need 0.7 from immigration, which would mean bringing in a young (<30 y/o) immigrant for every baby. Good luck with that.

Yeah exactly, it's one tier higher. It's on all the streaming sites, not as another artist named Majestica, but listed as Majestica albums.

For the record, this is what I see on their YouTube page.

Do you think that humans were specifically designed/selected to be conscious?

Wow. I heard about the bug but didn't realize it's that bad. This is almost apocalyptic.
