I used to work in (but not for) a major American big box store in my town as a cellphone salesperson, mainly for the big three carriers but also some prepaid brands as well. This one lady had bought a phone from a coworker which was advertised as “free”, and she thought that meant the service was free as well. So when she got a Blue phone bill in the mail she was pissed and came back in on the day I was working. I attempted to explain that 1) free phone doesn’t mean free service and 2) because of rules outside of my control, the return period is up and that means I am not allowed to reverse the sale or the bill. Needless to say, she was pissed.
