Vintage 1969 Breitling Chrono-Mat Ref. 2111 Caliber 11 – Cushion Case, Original Surfboard Dial, Micro-Rotor Automatic Chronograph

Embrace a monumental piece of horological history with this legendary 1969 Breitling Chrono-Mat reference 2111. Housing one of the world's first automatic chronograph movements—the groundbreaking modular Caliber 11—this bold cushion-case sports watch fuses radical late-60s design with pure mechanical innovation. Complete with a striking Navy blue / Silver surfboard dial layout and vibrant orange chronograph hands, it is a true statement piece tailor-made for serious vintage chronograph collectors.

Historical Context & Fun Facts * The "Project 99" Race: Released in 1969, this watch belongs to a small fraternity powered by the legendary Caliber 11 (co-developed by Breitling, Heuer-Leonidas, Büren, and Dubois-Depraz). This micro-rotor automatic chronograph movement famously beat out rivals in a high-stakes secret race to introduce the world's first automatic chronograph. * The Chrono-Mat Legacy: Originally patented in the 1940s with a built-in slide rule bezel for engineers and scientists, the line evolved into stunning sport chronographs like this cushion-shaped Ref. 2111 variant, which captured the adventurous aesthetic of the space-race era. * Left-Hand Crown Configuration: Because the Caliber 11 is an automatic chronograph module built upon a micro-rotor base, the winding crown sits uniquely on the left side of the case while the chronograph pushers reside on the right, a quirky hallmark cherished by connoisseurs.

I would not touch a dial like that. There is already degrading of the original lacquer. Thats real aging and history, not dirt and stains by the looks of it.

SnooCompliments9653

I love patina, but I hate dirt and stains. I cannot remove actual dial patina. Only dirt and stains stuck on top of the original lacquer.

SnooCompliments9653

Thanks

SnooCompliments9653

Thank you

SnooCompliments9653

I'll try on the next one. I only do it on severely dirty dials. I only have an old Samsung phone so I'll give it my best shot.

SnooCompliments9653

Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated.

SnooCompliments9653

Made me giggle, love it.

SnooCompliments9653

Where are you located? I sent you a private message 👌

SnooCompliments9653

Thats fair. I just couldn't live with the oil stains and the bad redial. Whoever had it before used a pen or paint of some sort to trace over all of the optional Omega dial printing. I just couldn't stand looking at it and wanted it back to original Omega printing 🤣

SnooCompliments9653

Thanks, much appreciated

I would leave it, i destroyed 50+ junk dials before I ever tried a nice one. Its already gorgeous.

SnooCompliments9653

According to him people prefer damaged, dirty repainted dials. I've not heard that before but to each thier own 🤣

SnooCompliments9653

Extremely slow, extremely delicate.

Start with 1l warm water with 1-2 drops dish soap and just pat it with a magic eraser that is barely moist. This step can take hours and hours to remove built up grease, oil, nicotine stains etc.

Next a soft bristled toothbrush that I have heat treated so the bristles are even softer. Dip this in Light Distillate Hydrotreated Naphtha and flick off 90% of it and ever so gently brush over the dial. Just enough that the bristles barely even touch it.

Used to take me 4+ hours to achieve this sort of clean but I have done enough now I have it down to about 2.5 hours per dial.

Bonus is I haven't destroyed a dial in months 🤣🤣

SnooCompliments9653

🤣🤣🤣 fair enough but I just couldn't stand the oil stains and the horrible repaint. Luckily the original prints were still pristine underneath.

No idea why it was painted over, in my eyes I saved its life 🤣

I wish this was the case, just a few hundred hours of testing and practice 🤣

SnooCompliments9653

🙌

SnooCompliments9653

I did in the early days, its a good way to easily remove all of your applied indicies and logos, they just vibrate right off 🤣 Never again....
