Snapchat and Text Trails: Investigators uncovered group chats and Snapchat messages sent among the fraternity members during and immediately after the incident. In one instance, a member took a revealing photo of Jane Doe and shared it with an immature comment.

Attempts to Align Stories: According to police records, Chi Phi fraternity leadership allegedly held a meeting to align their members' stories and coordinate a cover-up to prevent the details of the gang rape from spreading.

Corroborating Records: Although the emergency room visit for a rape kit was delayed, Jane Doe preserved critical evidence from the night, including a photo of a hickey, photos of fading bruises, and the unwashed dress she wore during the alleged assault.

Title IX Findings: Unlike the local DA who initially walked away from the case without interviewing witnesses, Cornell University conducted a formal, extensive Title IX investigation featuring more than 50 interviews and 32 witnesses.
The university panel found enough evidence of wrongdoing to permanently ban the Chi Phi chapter from campus, expel two students, suspend others, and sanction others for attempted sexual exploitation.

Because the original local prosecutor declined charges without ever looking at the Snapchat threads, the witness statements, or the university's 99-page findings, New York Governor Kathy Hochul stepped in. She appointed New York, Attorney General, Leticia James. as a special prosecutor to present the case to a grand jury, stating that the justice system systematically failed to properly review the evidence the first time around.
