SnowflakeMonkey

I'd avoid aoc as they are very undersaturated in HDR

But if you have no other choice I guess it's fine

SnowflakeMonkey

well there is not much to do once you've shown people how to reno or luma.

I don't need to shit 36 videos a week about "OMG I FIXED LG TV CALIBRATION V4.234554 JOIN ME ON DISCORD AND BECOME A MEMBER FOR 10$" grifting crap.

But i'm working on redoing a fresh all in one tutorial with RHI.

edit : woops read too fast, i'm good and you ?

SnowflakeMonkey

but the guy you're answering to is perfectly aware of that and is only referring to how HDR is implemented on the software side.

Most games are broken on all platforms due to that and that's it, there is no magic console sauce.

SnowflakeMonkey

Bro, tv or console the games have bad HDR implementation, no TV can save piss poor HDR, neither does DTM.

there is no correlation between the display peak brightness capabilities and how the source HDR implementation is done.

I have a super claibrated S95D TV and when the game has bad HDR, I can see it.

SnowflakeMonkey

Yeah I get you but aside from fromsoft games, they all have very very subpar HDR implementations.

The NVAPI washed out look breaks the game rendering altogether, but even if it works their HDR tonemapping code is either awful (RE games) or pure dogshit (HItman 3)

they are High profile HDR games, but they are only around 10 games.

Far cry from the hundred of games renoDX improves.

SnowflakeMonkey

Which games are you referring to ? i've tested many games between both platforms and get the same presentation, or if it's different, still heavily deviates from how SDR is graded.

I've even made lenghty comparisons with extracted HDR footage : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wv4vNjifx3g

There are no reasons for the HDR code to change during a port except if it's a third party one.

SnowflakeMonkey

I mean you can't just state that without saying it requires renodx mod for it to be perfect lol

SnowflakeMonkey

uhm no you're talking about a handful of games, maybe 3-4.

The biggest offender is the spiderman trilogy that nixxes ruined on PC.

SnowflakeMonkey

From nvidia reflex behavior, and how special K calculates the accurate limiter value.

This comes from the fact that regular fps limiters have a 1ms frametime variance, which isn't precise enough at very high refresh rates, so you need a bigger margin to make sure you never hit the max refresh rate of the display.

The lads on the special K discord can give you more in-depth answer.

But yeah -3 isn't enough, it only kinda works at 120hz, you hit the ceiling more often afterwards.

SnowflakeMonkey

Il me semble que c'est pas très utile de prendre une 5080 car la différence de perf ne justifie pas la différence de prix

SnowflakeMonkey

If you wanna get the best the picture quality of your display, HDR is absolutely mandatory, on pc you can virtually play all games with HDR thanks to mods.

Here are my protips :

Windows desktop is washed out aswell as SDR apps due to usng sRGB gamma curve instead of 2.2, this isn't very relevant as HDR is for HDR content first and foremost.

You can install this to fix desktop : https://github.com/SERGEYDJUM/dwm_eotf_rs

The real problem is that most games are SDR only and only a small number of HDR implementations are good, most are broken in some manner or others (even on consoles) which require manual fixes by modding the game code.

You can check this database for how good implementations are : https://github.com/KoKlusz/HDR-Gaming-Database/

Otherwise use RENODX & LUMA framework mods on as many single player games as possible to have the best HDR from the get go without fiddling. They either fix poor implementations, or adds proper true engine HDR to games lacking it.

RHI is a great tool to install these quickly : https://github.com/RankFTW/RHI

Renodx list : https://github.com/clshortfuse/renodx/wiki/Mods

Luma list : https://github.com/Filoppi/Luma-Framework/wiki

TLDR : Use DWM_EOTF to "fix the desktop" gamma + Mod your non-competitive games with RENO/LUMA with RHI (takes 5 seconds per game) and done.

SnowflakeMonkey

It definitely is, it's the game color grading with  HDR10 PQ metadata, it's litterally how HDR is supposed to be.

So your problem is just that you dislike the games intended color grading, you're probly using saturated SDR which is fine in itself but you can just crank saturation in renodx too, and get the added HDR details

SnowflakeMonkey

It's how the game is supposed to look like ? That is what perfect means.

SnowflakeMonkey

You're supposed to keep it there, so the eotf tracking stays accurate and you can use the full  capabilities and dynamic range of the display.

It's better to reduce the peak brightness slider in games if you wish to stay conservative.

Bright objects in HDR gaming are only present for a few moments and you're always moving, you will never get burn in because of that.

When you analyze HDR content with a heatmap you see that only the ingame sun and a few objects truly push the brightness, these are not a concern ever.

SnowflakeMonkey

I'm confused at you spending too much time trying to make hdr look perfect when it's just

Step 1) open RHI

Step 2) click install reshade

Step 3) click install renodx.

That's about 10 seconds on a game once.

SnowflakeMonkey

32" 4k, 27" 1440p

SnowflakeMonkey

What the hell are you talking about

SnowflakeMonkey

All you need to do is check how highlights get blown out instead of detailed with HGIG.

SnowflakeMonkey

Massive cope.

SnowflakeMonkey

You don't notice anything because it doesn't do anything but tell 3 games native HDR and renodx what's the peak of the display.

It's useless basically.

SnowflakeMonkey
SnowflakeMonkey

RTX HDR is just unreliable, you should ditch it and use native HDR, with mods preferably.

Not only will it always work, it will also not eat performance and give you a much better more detailed HDR presentation.

Both BL4 and darktide have functioning renodx mods (get the github snapshots for darktide as the nexus mod is outdated)

SnowflakeMonkey

Wdym

SnowflakeMonkey

Both have different strengths and weakness however from a technical standpoint QD-OLED has beaten WOLED equivalents (G series mind you with tandem WOLED panels) for years on professional shoutouts (check out HDTVTEST)

QD-OLED have less issues, better color purity, better uniformity.

LG WOLEDs have better coating that preserve black level better in very bright rooms but that's it, to extract the most of these panels and HDR you have to control the light in the room anyways.

SnowflakeMonkey

no problem, the fps limiter should be set according to these rules for optimal experience (you can use RTSS as a global limiter or radeon chill)

120hz : 120 - (120 * 120) / 3600.0 = 116hz

144 - (144 * 144) / 3600.0 = 138.24hz

240 - (240 * 240) / 3600.0 = 224hz

360 - (360 * 360) / 3600.0 = 324hz

480 - (480 * 480) / 3600.0 = 416hz
