If you're wanting to do the epic pokemon cross stitch then do it! I'm planning on doing it for my next project and going one color at a time so that it's not so much of an investment up front, starting with black and then working my way down through what needs the most hanks to the least.

Also, be on the lookout for sales, 123stitch.com has them fairly often

As far as free patterns go, go to your local library! Mine is fairly small and it still has years of backlogged issues of cross stitch magazine both physically and digitally, you can make photocopies of the patterns to work from. Or, if you're willing to do more classic samplers and the like there are some great websites with vintage patterns (bookmarked on my pc, I can provide them if you're interested)

dmc.com also has some really pretty patterns available for free

But if you can't find anything free that you like, I'd suggest taking some time to save up. Do something smaller in the meantime, or something monochrome (one color) so that you only need to buy one hank at a time. Like the other commentor said, large patterns are an investment regardless of where you get the pattern. Floss is cheap but it adds up quickly, and aida is expensive for large cuts.

Response to your edit: I always open mm then abandon my task while I’m picking what task I’m going to do. You can keep using the same mm tab, you just have to quickly open and close the new mm tab at the beginning of each task

Most drivers go by miles. I don’t drive anymore, but my rule was a dollar a mile

Unfortunately, pearl cotton isn’t what you need for cross stitch. You need embroidery floss

I scrunch mine up before I start the project, it softens all that extra starch really well
