The thing about atmospheres is that one needs to suffocate before anything happens. One knows this particular atmosphere of an office during a holiday weekend? The absence of wind, the lack of drafts, just this air conditioning machine going at room temperature forever. Combine that with the low, tooth-rattling noise of ventilation that never stops, or perhaps even this chemical scent of citrus they use to clean industrial carpet and the next thing you know, you just can’t breathe, long before the action starts. The next thing one wants to change is the scale, but just by a bit. If there’s some black sludge oozing through the corridor, that’s what monster movies are all about. Boring. But it’s actually this feeling when a corridor becomes the way dentist's offices looked like ever since you've been a child, except that now all those doorknobs are on knee-level. Or stairs which go up with a rise of 1.5 inches more than normal. One’s body recognizes the inaccuracy first, then brain. One stumbles and everything turns into a threat. And don’t throw away all the bureaucratic nonsense, for goodness’ sake.
