He was probably trying to feel you out as a prospect for sneaking in contraband. You used to buy from him, so you seemed superficially down, but then he didn't get the right vibe from you, so he didn't pursue it.

This is most likely what it was about. Trust me, he also knew you weren't that close.

SubatomicGoblin

This is actually. . . horrible.

SubatomicGoblin

It's sometimes difficult, but I've learned to manage my addiction and lead a fairly normal life. I would suggest trying controlled use throughout the day. I've found that this approach works best for me. Good luck.

SubatomicGoblin

Yes.

SubatomicGoblin

The former, clearly.

SubatomicGoblin

That's actually somewhat reassuring. We all have weird intrusive thoughts, many of which recur. Perhaps this is just one of your intrusive routines that's harmless, so long as you're not planning anything out.

"Let me concoct a story that will make me sound deeply intellectual, though I hope you won't think it's about that."

Occasional suicidal ideation is rather common. A constant fixation on it becomes less common the more frequently you fixate on it. Wondering what it would be like to do it is something a bit different from it including the ingredient of desire. If you have that, you may need to address it.

This is a rather small, unimportant thing, but I have an unabiding hatred for the phrasing "Love me some whatever." You can be talking about music, specific artists, a certain activity, or even food, and when someone says "Ooh, love me some Zeppelin," I just want to smack the shit out of them.

I also quietly hate the continuing "ghettoiffication" of popular slang and informal speech. Middle class suburbanites and rural folk shouldn't sound like they're from the hood. Many aren't even conscious of the origins of the phrases or terms they're using though, and this makes the process rather insidious.

SubatomicGoblin

I too am a bit surprised by this. The video gave it an outsized popularity, I suppose.

SubatomicGoblin

It's the main reason I don't have any. Any widely followed trend is something I want no part of.

SubatomicGoblin

And way too big. Some are the size of small ships.

SubatomicGoblin

Holy shit.

SubatomicGoblin

You've known four people who have done this?

Country fried steak with mashed potatoes, all smothered in thick white gravy, with deep fried okra and either cornbread or biscuits with loads of butter. High calorie, high cholesterol, and American as hell.

SubatomicGoblin

That's the long and short of it, yes. It's frightening to think what our world is going to be like in ten years.

I was actually in the best physical shape of my life during my forties. Did vigorous calisthenics and ran several miles daily. I enjoyed that last little bit of elasticity of youth before my knees and back kind of went bad on me. I still had a mental acuity that has faded a bit. Ages 40-46 particularly were among the best of my life.

I read The Human Stain, the last one of that trilogy, not too long ago, and I thought it was excellent. I haven't yet read American Pastoral, but the film was quite good.

Jung is best read within the context of the historical development of psychology, and for being one of the earlier critics of Freud. Much of it was so highly speculative and rendered obsolete by modern brain science and genetics, though. There's still some insight here and there, but most of it just doesn't pass the BS test today.

Similar to the pharmacy, only it's the staff that's lost. It's like the concept of a pharmacy was just invented, and no one's quite sure how it works yet.

SubatomicGoblin

My acquaintances and I only use those terms in an ironic and mocking way. I don't think I frequent any store where an employee would use the word drip to describe the article he or she was trying to sell me, but there might be some code switching going on there.

SubatomicGoblin

Mine was pretty much a cat neighborhood, so obviously not very threatening like that. There were always three or four cats, and each had a home base, technically, but they just roamed around and ate anywhere they pleased.

SubatomicGoblin

Never in My Life is a better song by them.

SubatomicGoblin

Same thing happened to me. I got hit somewhat hard but didn't even get knocked off my feet. Big bruise on my left thigh though.

SubatomicGoblin

That's a you problem. Time limits are necessary, or nothing would ever get done. There are larger scheduling considerations that require them. You just need to better prepare yourself and gain better control of your emotions.
