Nazi Germany fell more than 80 years ago. Everyone involved in VW as it existed back then has almost certainly passed, if by nothing else than by old age. Elon Musk is still politically active, and still personally enriched by the performance of his companies.

This is a false equivalence.

Still nobody was ever going to successfully boycott him into the poor house, and it’s not like the CEO of Toyota cares if I live or die either. I say buy the car if you want one. I did.

Loan to value—how much are you financing vs. what’s the actual value of the vehicle? Don’t quote me on this but I think the 0.99% APR deal is for LTVs of 95% or less, meaning anything not covered by 95% of the purchase price must be covered between your down payment and trade in credit.

Fish pee in the water that supplies the pool. Not to mention whatever other animal pee ends up in it.

All water is diluted urine (unless you distill it)

If you’ve read this comment you now knowingly drink fish pee

I needed to go outside to convince myself that I pass. I don't know that I would have accepted it without overwhelming social proof.

I became “they” in the eyes of others within just a few months, and failed an ID check because “that’s a man’s ID” in just over a year. (A few days less than one year and one and a half months.)

I know that’s not typical, but that speaks in part to redistribution mechanisms that work on scales shorter than a decade. The suggestion to eat enough and work out will probably improve people’s overall health even if it fails to accelerate redistribution for them.

I picked up weightlifting and it led to very rapid changes to the shape of my body—for a short while I lost a pant size every month. I don’t know why but I know it happened. But even if it hadn’t I’m probably still better off for the time I’ve spent in the gym.

I bought a Model 3 because it was 2021 and I wanted an EV I could drive across the country. I didn't buy it to swear fealty to the manufacturer's CEO. I'm trans for Fred's sake. Not here to open THAT can of worms, but…

My point is you buying or not buying a Tesla doesn't materially affect my life at all. My problems are not problems other people can solve by buying a different car. People need to get a grip.

Though I did enjoy the irony of a carload of people doing a Nazi salute at me as they drove by me. Me driving the same car I drove myself in to the state capitol over and over again to talk to our actual lawmakers. None of whom I think are the CEO of any major car manufacturer.

If anyone ever takes it up with me, that's the direction I would go. I bought a tool I use to do things they'd probably agree with me doing, but from a manufacturer whose CEO they don't agree with. And if they want to help they should quit whining and join me instead.

Isn’t waist circumference almost as easy to measure and a better indicator of health risk than BMI? Why not use that? See: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14985210/

If a doctor gets an extremely muscular patient with a technically overweight BMI, they aren’t going to tell them to lose weight.

Citation needed.

My own primary care started to lecture me about my weight. I expected him to tell me I’m overweight—by BMI I’m normal to slightly overweight, but I’ve been strength training regularly for a few years and I carry a decent amount of muscle.

Nope! He was concerned I was underweight. Turns out the height recorded in my chart was 5’5”. I’m only 5’0” because you get to round up. I pointed that out and his response? “You’re not 5’5”?”

How do you not notice your adult patient is the size of a 12 year old‽

But I guess technically he never told me to lose weight.

This is a silly semantic debate.

Genetic sex is nearly binary. (Some people are chimeras and have mixed sex chromosomes, but that’s thought to be rare. But nobody screens for this without a reason, so we may underestimate its prevalence.)

Gonadal sex is nearly binary. (Some people have both ovarian and testicular tissue, but that’s thought to be rare. There are multiple case reports of this being discovered for the first time in adulthood, though, so we probably underestimate its prevalence.)

But the binary blurs the moment you step back even slightly from those things, in ways that are actually important. Especially if you insist on, say, passing laws defining sex. Nearly every “definition of sex” law/EO declares people with CAIS are male, for example, because they have XY chromosomes and are born with testes. But they are also born with a condition that causes a profound inability to virilize, and are assigned female at birth.

A single gene mutation produces someone who, for nearly all intents and purposes, is the opposite of their genetic sex. There is no public safety interest in putting people with CAIS into men’s prisons if they commit crimes, nor forcing them to use men’s showers, locker rooms, and restrooms. In fact that would be transparently absurd.

This is because sex, as we know it for most purposes, is the very indirect consequence of sex chromosomes and gametes. (And occasionally surgeons.) Something that depends on functioning hormone production, an absence of excessive opposite sex hormone production, functioning hormone receptors, and countless functioning downstream genes whose expression is modulated by sex hormones.

And that’s not remotely binary.

I don’t think most people object to that. Sticking points are just literally anything we need to do to live our lives in peace.

Gender markers on driver’s licenses? Controversy; rules subject to change on a whim. States increasingly hostile to letting you change those at all.

Birth certificates? Why would you want to change those? Those are a factual record of your biology at birth (They’re genuinely not, for the record, for so many reasons.)

Passports? Rules about to be changed by executive order every new administration. People in my replies unironically arguing your (chromosomes|theoretical or actual gamete type) is useful information to border patrol somehow.

Bathrooms? Ur gonna corrupt our pristine toilet seats with your * checks notes * Y chromosome? Or what if someone sees your genitals behind a closed stall door? That’s a real thing that actually happens, right? Riiight?

Unfortunately ID documents kind of are the government’s domain. But hopefully most people can see why forcing Hunter Schafer to walk around with ID saying she’s male is insane. I hate that this happened to her, but maybe at least she’ll get more visibility than the average trans person.

Sort of. They have a copy of every passport application you (or your parents) have ever sent them, along with all supporting documents. They’re known to be using this info to revert gender markers.
