Laughing my ass off at the “Brother! You’re all chopped up!” Comment beneath that
ThePotablePotato
Yeah while I never really played it myself (beyond checking the game out), I’d assumed it was chugging along in the background like Masters was. Surprised to see it EoS
ThePotablePotato
Also got spoiled because of it unfortunately, so you’re not alone.
Looked at it, went ‘was this a thing from another dlc I forgot existed’ then actually opened the log and recognised what was going on immediately seeing it be a log from Providence’s PoV
ThePotablePotato
Ah, I probably should’ve specified that it’s come back around yet again in the past few years, going from;
Amazing reception > ‘actually this game sucked’ > ‘actually this game never sucked it was always good’
ThePotablePotato
I love Sunshine for its level structure and core gameplay more than anything.
It, for the most part, has the best of both worlds of 64 and Post-Sunshine level design;
You get the enclosed space design of 64’s worlds but with a degree of cohesiveness that 64 often lacks (looking at you, Rainbow-Ride-Random-Bullshit-Go)
Things like the 100 coin shines return, but with less of a reliance on permanently missable coins like 64 had. But you also get more ‘designed’ levels over 64’s approach of most stars just being present on the map during any level.
I also love Blue Coins conceptually as the middle ground between Odyssey’s ever-plentiful moons and full stars - however I won’t really blame someone for hating Blue Coins since their distribution is genuinely awful. Because standing atop a golden mushroom and… spraying the moon is so obvious right?
ThePotablePotato
That’s true. I think over time it’s drifted one way then the other. When it released, critical reception was extremely positive, but over the years it definitely gained a reception as the black sheep that ‘shouldn’t be listed alongside the other 3D Mario games’.
Now, some of the criticism is entirely deserved, but I would say the same about 64, which I feel often doesn’t receive the same level of backlash (even when being generous for it basically pioneering the genre)
ThePotablePotato
There’s a certain irony with OOP having a Super Mario Sunshine Pfp when it’s probably one of the clearest examples of this.
Mind you I say this as someone who genuinely believes Sunshine has the best gameplay of the 3D games
ThePotablePotato
Same boat here - Started on Gen 3, and while I love Gen 4 still I will gladly tear Diamond/Pearl to shreds for how much it gets wrong. Meanwhile the Alola games are easily second place
ThePotablePotato
Donphan is still UU though which is actually insanely good for a mon released almost 30 years ago in its base form
ThePotablePotato
Returning next US election as Ruler of Brezerant???
ThePotablePotato
Definitely doable.
Beat it as Dietrich in a single turn (as in a single turn of fighting it, not one turn of the whole map lol) by getting Crits on Dietrich, Esmeralda and Fabio back to back. House Lamine is the Crit squadron
ThePotablePotato
Oh my god the Red Bull of Arago
ThePotablePotato
Artificer: I am at peace and in charge of my own Ion Surge
Enforcer: FUCK IT WE 15X SHIELD TACKLE
ThePotablePotato
That’s fair. I think I gained a lot of love for Ringed City as a zone back when I used to invade there a ton. I personally liked the enemy density but I can definitely imagine it feeling ganky for some
ThePotablePotato
Yeah I’d say Cathedral, Archives and Ringed City are probably the best from 3 in terms of level layout and design. I do understand why some people wouldn’t like them from an aesthetic point of view though
ThePotablePotato
These are really pretty! The decrepit Celesteela in the background of the Golisopod one is awesome. Bax is looking a little big though…
ThePotablePotato
All the more reason the overhaul the whole process then, no?
ThePotablePotato
Individually? Not too different. But the quantity is so much higher. Where there was garbage before, there’s now enough to drown everything else
ThePotablePotato
Ah, my bad. Somehow glossed over that completely. Probably just an oversight on the hack dev’s side then (or a really weird case where they try to set up Guts without actually checking the target it’s being used on)
I still think the most likely outcome is that it’s a result of ‘use wisp until success, and if opponents can’t be hit select the next valid target’ though
ThePotablePotato
If you’re just running the game unaltered then the emulator shouldn’t (in theory) be affecting anything.
I’ve got no idea why it’s happening but if I had to take a guess it’s just that the AI is designed to ‘use Wisp until it connects’ while also acknowledging that Crafty Shield is making your side unavailable as targets.
Triple Battles got largely neglected in Gen 6 so the AI being less thoroughly tested wouldn’t come as a surprise
ThePotablePotato
Frontlines are a non issue with Avo that high
ThePotablePotato
Me when I die and return to dirt
ThePotablePotato
Auto-activities get replaced by a menu to select how many turns you spend digging away at the wall with a spoon

Spoilers for the structure of the game:
The game is three parts; Heroic Games Arc, War Arc, Salvation Arc. Part 1 - the Heroic Games, is predominantly entirely unique content for each character and is about 25-35 hours long EACH. Part 2 - War Arc, is much shorter, and is basically exactly the same for every character with small dialogue changes. Part 3 - Salvation is where the stories converge in gameplay. There is only the one Part 3.
If this DLC is adding actual new routes, then that will be all Part 1 content, and the ability to play Part 2 as those new characters
I know people rag on Root for both simplicity and lack of difficulty but goddamn if it isn’t one of the most unique and gorgeous environments in any game I’ve ever played
