Paul Verhoeven loves a co-ed shower scene.

When did we all start talking non-stop about potholes, it’s just in the last 6 months, right? Feels like last year all anyone gave a shit about was crime.

5 and 6 are a bit patchy, but there’s a whole bunch of great episodes in there, and the new cast members worked really well. It’s kind of funny people mourning the show after S3, because at the time it came out people were absolutely shitcanning S3.
I think some people at the time had the idea that Community is supposed to be like Scrubs or something, where it’s a feel-good workplace comedy about a bunch of people working through their problems, which is what it appears to be on the surface, particularly in the first season-and-a-half.

If it was playing near me, I’d love to go see a version with proper subtitles. Sounds like the kind of thing they might show at the Nova.

Anyone remember Pussy Riot?

I always used to think of them as being very dour and emotional and self-important, and now when I hear that title track I just think “oh, they’re doing Bohemian Rhapsody”.

In my 8-9 years in tech, I’ve never seen this many people freaking out at once.
I work for a company that’s a merger of a bunch of other companies with pre-existing products, each with their own tech stacks. Some are unaffected. Some just have to do a little patch. Some are pulling their hair out trying to complete a bunch of long-overdue upgrades in the shortest possible space of time. Some are just screwed, and aren’t even bothering to try to fix the problem.

It was just super hazy this morning. Hazy, but sunny. At a guess, I’d say the light comes in at an angle high enough to bypass a lot of the haze, then bounces off the windows at an angle that catches the haze.

A lot of Shakespeare probably also comes from other plays that were around at the time. Most of them are stories that would have been familiar to the audience.
ThoseOldScientists
Much the same for blues. Lots of people putting their spin on songs that people knew. A lot of theatre was the same way. Shakespeare wasn’t inventing stories out of whole cloth.

You obviously weren’t listening very hard in 2016. He was one of the only people who gave Trump a decent chance of winning (30/70), and specified exactly where Clinton was vulnerable.

I’ve seen some people try to argue that it’s actually just interest rates, and while I’m sure they’re helping accelerate the impact, there’s no getting around the shift of investor money from existing stock to new builds. Smoking gun. The policy is working.

There have been public complaints about the way The Greens handle internal sexual harassment/assault claims for years, at least going back to a rash of stories in 2017. Back then the claim was that the party was so decentralised and disorganised that they just didn’t have the internal processes to deal with those kinds of situations properly.
Apparently since then they’ve reflected on their mistakes, and started really getting organised about covering up assault and harassment.

I get the same thing interstate, or else people saying “I’m sure it’s not as bad as the newspapers say, but how bad is it?”
ThoseOldScientists
I’m sure this is meant to mean “Democrats will outlaw the Republican Party if they gain power”, but it really comes off more as “The sun will be extinguished if the emperor dies, and the senate Republican caucus must be bricked up in his mausoleum so they can continue to serve him in the afterlife”.

I’m going to completely ignore any cynicism I have about late arriving sequels for this movie. Even if every signal that comes out about it suggests that it’s a blatant cash grab and the reviews are terrible, I’m seeing in the cinemas. At the very least, they’ve made an effort to get everyone back.
And who knows, it may turn out to be the Fury Road of the franchise.

I agree that the capabilities have come a long way, but it’s in narrow areas. They were being used for coding in 2024, and they’ve gotten vastly more capable in that area (I am a programmer/IT infrastructure engineer, so I’ve seen this happening first hand) but I’m not seeing any signs of their capabilities getting significantly broader at a rapid pace. For all the talk of their potential in education, healthcare, management, menial work, all of that is still hitting the same barriers it was a few years ago. I think those areas will be impacted, but not as suddenly or disruptively as coding. Coding is the easiest one to automate, because it’s purely about language and information processing.
Coding, translation, and misinformation are the low hanging fruit. Everything else is going to be harder and slower, more like the way other technologies have transformed the economy over a period of decades.

I think you, and a lot of other people in this thread, are over-estimating AI.

But that’s the assumption that always gets made, and it’s never yet been true. And if it ever is true, then I guess we’ll just have to start guillotining Bourbons.

I was responding to the claim that there’s going to be a collapse in the need for human labour overall, which is a frequently made claim.
The live album from the Isolar II tour (Welcome To The Blackout) is pretty great. Looking forward to this.
