Israel is slow walking the ceasefire on purpose, keeping Gaza just violent enough to prevent rebuild but not enough to spark global outrage. The goal seems to be making life so unbearable that Palestinians leave. Trump admin is basically letting them do it. Unless the US actually forces Israel to follow the deal, Gaza is gone for good.
Kinda wild that Kushner promised rebuild in 100 days and 9 months later theres literally nothing. Just tents, disease, and airstrikes during a ceasefire. Netanyahu rejected the July deal that Hamas actually agreed to. Hes demanding total disarmament before any Israeli withdrawal, which is just never gonna happen. So the process stays stuck forever and that seems to be the point.
Mladenov basically said it himself, if this keeps going Gaza will be gone. And Ben-Gvir is out here openly talking about voluntary emigration plans. Like come on. The US could pressure Israel but they wont. So yeah, unless something changes, Gaza is cooked.

But this is so romantic.. Right.. right?

Immoral, also your religion is stupid.

Ah yes, bleach the skin, fake the eyes, and train away your own voice. You're not a Viking, you're a full-time impersonator of a race you hate. And after all that, one slip of the tongue and you're back to square one. That's not passing, that's a prison you built for yourself.

Thank you, AI slop is a lazy take. I actually explained how the mechanic worked, which is more than most people do. If you've got a better breakdown, post it.
TryNice304
Rome's dictator was basically an emergency switch. Normal Rome had 2 consuls who could veto each other plus tribunes who could veto anything. Great for preventing tyranny, awful in a war when you need fast decisions.
Dictator = no veto, no debate, one guy in charge, one plan. Not because he's smarter, just because the Republics normal speed bumps would get everyone killed.
Supposed to step down after. Sulla and Caesar didn't. Thats what killed the Republic.

I don't think this is a real video. Am I allowed to say it's AI?

You're right that tranquility isn't the goal in classical Stoicism and virtue is. The Hercules quote makes that clear. The work is the point, and calm is what shows up after you've done it. I'm not disputing that.
But "Irvine explicitly ignores virtue" is too strong. He mentions it, he just demotes it. He makes tranquility the target and virtue the tool for getting there. That's a shift in emphasis, not an erasure. He even admits in the book that his version is unlike any ancient Stoic's. So he's not pretending to be orthodox.
Where I'd push back on your framing is the practical side. If someone actually does Irvine's exercises, negative visualization, voluntary discomfort, focusing on what's up to them, they end up more disciplined, more resilient, more decent. Those are virtues, whether or not virtue is the stated goal. The behavior follows the practice even if the theory is off.
So yeah, if you want Sagehood, Irvine won't get you there. But most people aren't trying to be Sages. They're trying to not lose their temper in traffic and not spiral over things they can't fix. For that, his framing works fine.
The Hercules point is legit for the theoretical critique. But treating Irvine like he's some corrupting influence on Stoicism is overblown. He's an entry point, not a replacement.
TryNice304
Good comment overall. The framing of the dichotomy as character vs everything else is the right one, and it does solve the voluntarism problem people keep dragging into this thread.
One correction though. Irvine doesn't "explicitly ignore" the Sage. He actually mentions it in the book, compares it to Buddha in Buddhism. So that part isn't accurate.
But the deeper point still stands. He mentions the Sage, then builds a framework where tranquility is the goal instead of virtue. So the Sage becomes a nod rather than the target. Thats the real criticism, not that he pretends it doesn't exist.
The quote at the end is the killer though. He admits his version is unlike any particular Stoic and unlike what an ancient school would teach. So people defending him as just repackaging Epictetus aren't reading their own guy. He's telling you straight up its a new thing.

Bro wrote a whole essay and still wrong. Classic.
First, you say "Pliny doesn't say that, point me to it." Then you cite Book 30.8 and 30.9, which are about dog teeth and mouse dung, not urine. You went looking in the wrong book and now you're acting like the book doesn't exist. That's not scholarship, that's just you not doing your homework. Academic dental history sources straight up say Pliny recommended urine as a mouthwash for whitening teeth. You demanding a quote while citing the wrong chapters is wild.
Second, your "processed product" argument. The Journal of Urology literally says "toothpaste in which urine was the key ingredient." Key ingredient. Not "extracted ammonia." Urine. You keep saying "derived/synthesized" like you're describing a chemistry lab. It was piss. Maybe mixed with pumice, maybe aged, but still piss. You made up a refinement process that nobody described just so you could win a reddit argument.
Third, the Catullus point. Yeah he mocked Egnatius. A Celtiberian. Guess what? Academic literature confirms Celtiberians, Cantabrians and neighbors used urine to brush teeth and wash bodies. Diodorus, Strabo, Catullus, Apuleius all mention it. Pliny, a Roman, put it in his encyclopedia. So it's not some "barbarian only" thing you can wave away. Romans knew it, Romans wrote it down, wealthy Romans imported Portuguese urine because they thought it was stronger. You don't import foreign piss for dental hygiene if your own people don't do it.
Fourth, you say "we have no evidence the urine tax fed dental use." Nobody said it did exclusively. But the same collection system and commodity market that made urine profitable for tanning also made it available for dental use. You can't prove a negative, you said it yourself. So stop demanding impossible proof while handwaving away actual sources.
You keep saying "I'm a Classicist" like that's a trump card. A Classicist who can't find Pliny's urine passage and thinks Catullus satire disproves a practice. Ok buddy.
Bottom line: you came in hot with "confidently incorrect" energy, cited the wrong chapters, invented a processing step, dismissed a urology journal because it hurt your feelings, and now you're asking for sources while providing none. You're the "vomiting rooms" guy but for piss mouthwash. Take the L.
TryNice304
Bro came in with "false misinformation" like he had receipts, then his big correction was "umm its processed pee not raw pee." Turns out even that was wrong, Romans used urine straight up.
Catullus literally roasted a dude named Egnatius for brushing his teeth with his own piss every morning . Pliny the Elder straight up recommended urine as an effective mouthwash to whiten teeth . Wealthy Romans even imported Portuguese urine because they thought it was stronger .
So you corrected me with something also false and acted like you won. Wild.

Youre right, flexing was the wrong word. My bad.
But you gotta admit you came in pretty hot with the "false misinformation" and "straight up absurd" like you were about to drop a peer reviewed study on ancient pee powder. Turns out the correction was just its processed pee not raw pee. Which is still pee. Thats it. Thats the correction.
TryNice304
Fair enough, you got me. I was exaggerating for the joke and you clocked it. It was a processed product made from urine, not literally swishing raw pee straight from the pot. I stand corrected.
But lets be real, "processed product derived from urine" is not the flex you think it is. You just described pee with extra steps and acted like that cleared the bar. Congrats, its not raw pee, its pee that went through a whole journey first. Still pee at the end of the day my guy.
TryNice304
Ok fair, you got me on the processed part. I'll take the L on calling it straight up gargling pee, thats a bit much. But lets not act like processed product derived from urine is some huge upgrade lol. Its still pee, just pee that went through a few extra steps. You're basically saying umm actually its fermented pee powder not raw pee like that makes it less nasty. Bro its still pee. You just described pee with extra steps and called it a win.
TryNice304
Yeah sorry but youre kinda splitting hairs. Yeah the ammonia was often extracted or the urine was aged and used as a base for powders and pastes, not like they were chugging fresh pee straight from the pot every morning. But its still pee at the end of the day. Whether you gargle it or grind it into a powder the source is still the same. And rancid aged urine was literally the point, thats how they got the ammonia strong enough to do anything. So congrats you upgraded from toilet juice to toilet powder. Still toilet juice my guy
TryNice304
Yeah its true. Romans literally gargled pee to get white teeth. The ammonia in it does actually work but it also eats your enamel so congrats on the white teeth and rotting gums i guess. They collected it from public toilets and Vespasian taxed it. Dude made a fortune off people's piss and hit his son with money doesnt stink when he complained. It was also used to wash clothes and tan leather btw. Rich people did it to look fancy. Imagine being so desperate for clout you rinse your mouth with toilet juice. Some things really shoulda stayed in history fr

No real extra space from mass.
Rubber sheet lies. Thats 2D bending into 3D so area grows. Spacetime doesnt bend into anything.
Force it anyway: ΔV/V ~ rs/R. For 1 kg thats ~1e-30. Nothing.
Also depends how you define volume. Different slice, different answer, even zero. Not physical.
Shapiro delay is real but not more space, just metric weirdness.
Tldr curved spacetime ≠ more space. Classic gotcha.
I don't even like Yudkowsky, but you're out here giving me AI slop that takes two seconds to generate. You're full of shit.
