The character design, sure, but that's not the problem. It's the art style itself and the colors. Nothing is distinct. Everything just blends together. That's the problem with "realistic" graphics.

This is what you get when EVERYONE is obsessed with realism. People think REALISM EQUALS BETTER GRAPHICS. It doesn't. It's just a style. Not an objective measurement of how "good" your graphics are.

It's so pathetic. Look up any graphics mod of Minecraft, any texture pack, any graphics mod of WoW Vanilla, or of any game for that matter. They all look like dogshit in the name of realism.

This is also why many modern competitive games fail, because everything gets extremely cluttered and nothing is distinct enough to stand out on its own. It's all just blended together.
