We're working on the new implementation for cm-13.0 :). Until then in cm-12.1 - CyanogenMod to CyanogenMod texting will be secured but the protocol fell out of sync..

It needs to be ported to the device before it can just "run". It's not that simple.

Use of AOSP test-keys is a serious problem in security terms. They are public and very exploitable. Other problems like random unaudited crappy hacks just added because they make something appear faster.

I didn't think the new messaging app was going to be on the play store but TextSecure of course is but I wasn't working on this project (device stuff generally for me) . This means you will be able to just use the TextSecure app to talk to CM users in a manner similar to iMessage
