She's got a few issues. She seems to think that I am a pastor for some reason and she thinks that if we were to put the James Webb Space Telescope on Mars and pointed it at Earth, it would allow us to see the future. And sadly, she homeschools her child and she submits our library programs to her charter school as assignments...even when her child doesn't attend (and when they do attend any programs, they are always 15-20 minutes late).

Ron Lynch has played a character named Ron on at least 5 different shows. He has played Mr./Dr. Lynch on at least 5 others.

We made a grown woman cry the other day by not letting her join the teen-only journaling program. She was really upset because she spent over an hour gathering her journaling supplies (not even sure what that would entail beyond a journal). Nevermind that I had told her earlier in the day that the program was going to be only for teens.

Oof, I sometimes forget that pre-built computers don't come with disk drives anymore (or that some folks don't even use computers). It might be worth checking with your local library. We have a "digitization station" at ours that includes a CD/DVD burner that people can use. We even provide blank disks for free, but that may not be standard practice.

100% agree with Link about Sriracha. Not for the same reasons, but still, I agree.

UndeadBread

To be honest, most of the stuff on there isn't really even worth watching anyway. I occasionally pay for a membership when they come out with a new board game and don't even bother with the bonus content but I still feel like I get my money's worth. At least it's not insanely overpriced mediocre cereal.

UndeadBread

Half of the things featured on that episode are products I already normally see in stores, especially Banana Kick and the Vero candy. And holy crap, that's expensive. Even the big bags are usually only $2.

UndeadBread

Uh... I'm pretty sure she's one of the most popular crew members.

UndeadBread

I dunno, I was surprised he got any points for that. I'd be insanely excited if someone brought sushi to a potluck.

UndeadBread

He's pretty damn good at the skee ball game.

UndeadBread

Nope, that's why we put them there. You're just helping to make room for more books to be featured in the display. If there aren't more for that particular theme, it's an excuse to put up a new display. We have tons of display ideas that don't get used because there isn't enough room, so this actually helps.

UndeadBread

It would be easy enough to just make your own DVD.

I'm not really sure what the other commenter is getting at with "teaches you something about yourself" but basically, the narrator is insane and most of what happens in the book probably didn't actually happen. I mean, it goes quite a bit deeper than that and there are a lot of debates over how everything should be interpreted, but that's a quick easy way to summarize it. I really enjoyed reading the book and it's a fascinating premise, but it isn't a horror at all.

UndeadBread

I shouldn't admit this, but I am genuinely depressed by this news. This is basically my favorite work lunch.

UndeadBread

I never judged, but I used to think it was odd because I've always thought of board games as a social activity; the whole point of them is to get people together for some fun. But then I finally tried one a couple of years ago and had a blast. It finally occurred to me that sometimes, the whole point of a game is the game itself. And now I've got a nice little collection of solo games for those nights when I'm in the mood to play something and nobody else is.

UndeadBread

No. It seems highly unlikely and even if they were, I wouldn't really care.

UndeadBread

Which one? I know of a few books by that title.

UndeadBread

I'm genuinely envious of people who can get scared by reading a book. I love the idea of being freaked out under the covers with a book and a flashlight.

UndeadBread

A great book for sure, but I wouldn't put it in the Horror section. I feel like it's more of a psychological drama.

I think some of the custom Prison Break maps were like that back in the day. You had to break out of the prison and instead of creating units, you had to find them on the map and recruit/convert them.

For the sake of clarity, what kinds of reference questions are we talking about that would normally be handled by a librarian and not the circ desk? Just wondering because we don't have a librarian at our branch, so we handle all of the questions by default and it's very rare to encounter something that I think would require a specially-trained professional (aside from things like medical or legal help that a normal library wouldn't handle anyway).

The amount of schooling is highly dependent on the area and what kind of staff is employed. At our library, only the supervisor needs a Bachelor's degree. A Master's degree is needed to become a librarian, but we don't have one at our location. In fact, between the 25-ish locations across in our county, I believe we only have 5 librarians right now and most of them are stationed at our HQ.

Privacy is indeed a big deal, however. We take privacy very seriously. There are even certain things we intentionally don't track about patrons so that even if the police come with a warrant, have no way of giving them the info.

UndeadBread

Only if it's causing a genuine disturbance. But we may recruit you for storytime!

UndeadBread

Eh, we don't usually mind this too much. Gathering them up only takes a few moments and then we get to track their usage. It's certainly better than people reshelving books themselves.
