Mods: Is this really the kind of content you want here? You're at serious risk of becoming a Nazi bar.

You automatically have copyright over everything creative you make. The difference with posting on reddit is in the TOS, which say you give reddit a license to reproduce anything you post. That's why if I write a poem and post it on this site, they aren't breaking copyright by copying it and sending it to users who view that post.

Those links don't back your argument that the majority of homeless want to be homeless.
Shelters are at an average of 97% capacity (as of 2024, latest data I could find): https://www.propublica.org/article/seattle-homeless-shelter-vacancies-civic-hotel
So no, the homeless can't "just go to a shelter", even if they are clean.
And addicts need help too!
Ununoctium117
Thank you for the resource, just did some quick reads of his wiki page and placed a hold on "The Myth of Normal" at the library.
It seems that Mate's views on addiction are controversial at best, but even taking them at face value, they doesn't back the original claim that the homeless and addicted want to be homeless and addicted and therefore the city shouldn't prioritize them.
In fact after reading some summaries of his views, I think he would argue the opposite. It seems that, in his view, to really heal, they need a chance to address their underlying trauma. That must be remarkably difficult when every day is a struggle to survive and find basic food and shelter.
Ununoctium117
Another classic deflection.
Got any data or evidence to back your argument? Why do you believe what you believe?
Ununoctium117
Ah, the classic "actually people want to live on the streets and be homeless" nonsense that conservatives love to pull out.
I simply don't believe you. Show me published data, evidence, or studies if you want to change my mind - I will if you do - but until then, I will continue to believe the common sense that, in general, people don't actually want to be addicts or to live in tents or to be homeless.
Ununoctium117
I'm so tired of conservatives pulling out the "actually they WANT to be miserable!" argument. Show me data or evidence if you want me to believe this, but in the meantime - no, most people don't want to be homeless, given free choice. Most don't want to be addicts or to live in tents on sidewalks.
Have some compassion for once in your life and try to understand that those people are people just like yourself - trying to live as best as they can with the resources they have.
Life sure would be easy if you could just say that "everyone who's homeless wants and deserves to be homeless", but it's just not true. If you want me or anyone else to believe that, show a study or data that backs it up.
Ununoctium117
Thank you for explaining the concept of "rules" to me, that would have been very helpful if I was in the first grade.
None of that has anything to do with the actual discussion about how the government should prioritize its resources, or my argument that those in the greatest need should receive the greatest help.
Ununoctium117
I used to live in the CID, and my position is still the same. Why do you think my compassion would change because I those most in need are more visible to me?
I want the city helping the homeless. I want my tax dollars going towards safe injection sites and rehab and detox facilities. I want the city to fund and subsidize affordable housing and shelters.
Every single homeless person is a reflection of a failure of our society, and there's very little that should be higher priority than helping them.
Ununoctium117
Disgusting and dehumanizing behavior on your part. Exile the "undesireables"??? Are you serious?
Ununoctium117
Why shouldn't the city care more about them? They're clearly more in need of help than the others you mentioned. It makes sense to focus the most attention and help on those who need it most.
Ununoctium117
The city government represents everyone, not just you. They also need to act in the best interest of the poor, those suffering from addiction or mental health disorders, and the homeless.
Ununoctium117
Do you have any links to accessories like this? I have a printer and just got my frame. I've got this printing now: https://www.printables.com/model/1855735-steam-frame-stand-headset-controller-holder-ergono

By design, because WebUSB isn't a standard and shouldn't be and shouldn't exist.

Disgusting to see a racist post like this upvoted - blaming immigrants for completely unrelated problems is horrible.
Ununoctium117
I don't understand them! But I do understand that housed people are generally happier than the homeless.
That's why I keep asking you to provide data to back up your statements about them! Because your statements are counter to the well-known data and common sense that housed people, on average, are happier than the homeless!
You've stopped responding to the actual things I'm saying and have devolved into insults. Can you actually back up your views without ad hominem attacks?
Ununoctium117
many don't consider themselves homeless and yes many choose not to go to shelters or tiny homes
Again, you're just stating claims without citing any studies, evidence, or data.
And now you're shifting the goalposts. Your original claim was "most"; now you claim "many". How many? In which demographics?
And yes, many many people - just look in this thread - do use "they want to live like this" as an excuse for hating them. That's the reason I'm stuck on this - I don't care about the exact numbers, but I care a lot about people spreading harmful misinformation.
You can build millions of tiny homes and there will still be people that choose not to live in them.
There will be many many more who do choose to live in them. See: all the tiny vertical townhomes in Seattle that do get bought, rented, and lived in. If there are a few people who choose to remain homeless, that's a shame but doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, since the vast vast majority are still helped. But framing it as "most of them want to be homeless" shifts the statement into an argument against building housing at all: "if they want to be homeless, why bother trying to help them?". It's a disturbingly common argument. That's why I'm pushing so hard for data and sources, because I want to disprove an inaccurate factual claim, or to have my own perspective shifted by new information.
Ununoctium117
Your claim:
Most of the RV dwellers don't want housing
Saying that most people who are living without permanent housing want it to be that way is an extremely unusual claim. We have a whole negative term to distinguish them from the rest of society: homeless. There are government and university studies of the causes of homelessness and its effects - it's not the natural or default state in society. Claiming that the majority of people experiencing homelessness, even a specific subset of them, enjoy that lifestyle is an extremely unusual claim.
There are plenty of other posts in this thread describing the squalor and general uncleanliness of people living this lifestyle, with human waste and other biohazards on park paths. And they're clearly hated by the majority in their communities. You're saying they want to live like that?
Sure, some vanlifers exist by choice, and I'm not arguing that. But saying that the majority of people living out of RVs prefer that to permanent housing, when we have strong evidence of how much that sucks, is extremely far fetched and needs something to back it up besides vibes and a few pieces of anectdotal evidence. Especially when the impact that statement has is "therefore it's ok to hate them, they chose this, it's their fault".
Ununoctium117
Nice, we have AI-generated tumblr posts now, so glad people are outsourcing their writing and thinking to machines on every corner of the internet now. Really looking forward to the complete homoginization of all writing online and the death of creativity!!!
Ununoctium117
We can have parks when we make housing accessible to all. Seems reasonable to focus on those of us who are suffering the most before worrying about having pristine public parks.
Ununoctium117
You are the one making an unusual claim - your job to back it with evidence. Since you don't have any, or refuse to share it, I have to assume you're lying or arguing in bad faith.
Ununoctium117
Ok, so you haven't talked to them, and you were lying and have no evidence, even anectodal. Do you plan on updating your beliefs since they aren't backed up by evidence, or is this conversation over because I'm not talking to someone capable of reasoning?
Ununoctium117
Because it does nothing to achieve justice. What do you think "justice" means?
Killing someone doesn't have anything to do with justice. And before you or anyone else says something about deterrance, https://www.ojp.gov/pdffiles1/nij/247350.pdf here's the government's own report about its successfulness at that:
According to the National Academy of Sciences, “Research on the deterrent effect of capital punishment is uninformative about whether capital punishment increases, decreases, or has no effect on homicide rates.”
Ununoctium117
Based on the comments here and the way they're being voted on, that's what people think in this subreddit too.
You're confused about this when it's someone saying "wow based" over racist and supremacist characters?
