My husband found me an antique Parker Pen display for my pens. It’s gorgeous! Lamy Safari and TWSBI Eco for scale. (old.reddit.com) [State of the Collection]

I was thinking that Miss Marple may not have been able to solve Five Little Pigs. I think she would be able to understand the psychology of the murderer and their motives but I don’t think she’d have as easily got to the logistics of the crime. This one was definitely built for Poirot and is stated as such when he is hired for the job.

It’s great, enjoy. You don’t need to read the books, there are no real spoilers as far as I have seen. It does help knowing the names of the characters etc as they are the answers to several of the clues. I have been using it as an excuse to re-read the books though.

A treasure chest on the top left shoulder. Love the dragon.

That’s awesome. Which game did you base this on?

I have mine in my Galen Leather Magnum Opus case, propped up at the back of my desk so I can see them all and they are protected.

I’m speaking as someone who got into my PhD program 10 years ago and whose husband also has a PhD. I think in certain subjects there is a small stigma about finding (I cannot speak about maths). For Engineering for example, it would be foolish not to have it funded by industry as you’ll be solving a real life problem that is needed and there’s a lot of funding to go round.

For my Chemistry PhD, my funding came from industry and that was great in that it gave the project purpose and gave connections to industry. However, there’s much less say in the direction of the project and you have to answer to the company.

PhDs are brutally hard on your mental health. To get through them, having a true interest and purpose in the project will really help you through it. And how well you get on with your supervisor and more importantly, the rest of the research group and the support they can give. If you’ve got a large, motivated group of PhD students and PostDocs to help you through it, it will be a lot better. It’s up to you to decide where you think you’ll get that support.

The funding definitely takes a lot of stress out of the process. If your parents can alleviate that stress and by other comments there should be some funding options available at Cambridge then that should be less of a factor for you than it would be for many others. I’m very pleased for you.

Considering the future after the PhD, a lot of people I knew stayed as PostDocs in the same lab for a while. Some of the engineers went straight to work for the companies that sponsored their PhD. Having seen a lot of people in “industry” most only know Oxbridge, the uni they went to and then all the rest so having Cambridge on your CV will still make a big difference, not to mention you’ll likely build some good connections during your time there. I would say it is still a big advantage.

You have to go with your heart, pick the topic to study that most excites you and pick the place where you will be most supported. Wishing you the very best of luck, whatever you choose.

Good advice. Also from lessons learnt, put a carrier bag or something plastic under the trap for easier cleanup.

I’ve really enjoyed using them. The covers are great. They work pretty well for fountain pens. No sheen and definitely don’t dump too much ink because it will go through (like going over the same spot a couple of times). Nice thick paper and fun designs. I personally think the line spacing is a bit on the large size but and very fond of mine.

Onoto Rosetta Stone. It’s beautiful but I think it’s at a price higher than I’d ever dare use so it would be a waste. I got to hold it at a pen show last year it’s gorgeous.

That’s great and an excellent choice of books too.

Congratulations, that is a huge achievement. I won’t offer advice either way but if you do decide not to go I would still commemorate your achievement in your own way.

Maybe a celebratory dinner. Or a commemorative purchase to remind you of how much you’ve achieved or overcome, such as a fountain pen or watch etc.

Thanks for the nostalgia for this first poem. I never knew there was a sequel.

I’m in the same boat. You need Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards. It’s a book on how to draw for people who “can’t draw” it’s fantastic.

It’s one of my favourite pens. I usually like broad/stub nibs but I have this in an Extra Fine and it just inspires me to draw with it (side note, I can’t draw for toffee, but this pen makes me want to keep trying). I will say I do much prefer the filling mechanisms of the TWSBI 580 (which also now comes in this colour scheme).

Awesome. Can I ask how you make your swatch cards? Do you ink then remove some with bleach or do you draw with something first then ink over it. They look fantastic.

I didn’t think I’d like that ink much but it really is fabulous for sketching. P.S. love your drawing.

I love it!!

I would leave it. Then it will make you smile every time you see Dump Overview.

Thanks it came with my Galen Leather case and I love it.

My latest acquisitions are the TWSBI Diamond Mini AL Fountain Pen Grape 1.1 Stub because I love purple and Sailor Fude de Mannen to try out a new nib style, it’s fun. I also had to get the two new Diamine inks that we helped design, very cool to be involved even a tiny bit in that process.

Oooh it looks really nice on the Paperblanks paper. How does that hold up for fountain pens, I’ve heard mixed reviews?
